because Sony decided to stick it on their camera with superior picture quality and more economical codec...Am i being controversial?

Just saying my thoughts after trading in my hvx for the ex1 and using it more in 3 weeks than I used my hvx for in a year. I love it and it goes everywhere with me. In bed, in the bath, i take it for romantic meals. I expect I will propose to it soon! I like them short and ergonomically awkward.

Nobody wants perfect do they?! Once you get perfection there is nowhere else to go!

She may be "ergonomically awkward", but after 3 weeks you certainly know how to push her buttons...

Philip, I know you're joking, but how hard is it, really, to handhold the EX-1? What about long periods? I'm considering it for events...but I don't know how I'm going to get my hands on one for a test run.

Can you keep it level and balanced with one hand on the grip, or do you have to use both hands at all times? Is it easy to keep the other hand free to work the lens and controls?

it is awkward. More so than say a z1. Probably. But you get used to it.

Awkward but doable... Ok, thanks.

Maybe something as the spiderbrace can help you out. It works good for me (on my older cam). Dont now if it works great on the ex1. Dont have one (not yet hehe).

Economical codec????? I like the EX as much as anyone, but that line was the spin of the century. It's like telling an indy driver that he got two less cylinders for fuel economy so he can pit fewer times and not reminding him he'll be going half as fast as everyone else.

Your statement is correct but leaves out some major information.

Have you graded any XDcamHD 35mbps footage?

*(Directed towards everyone)*

I am so sick of people armchair quarterbacking on this site of late. The Sony XDcam-HD codec works EXTREMELY well in the post environment. After shooting with it for over a year, I have been unable to break the thing. It grades very, very well and editing it is a breeze. I am just as big a Panasonic fanboy as you all are, but just looking at this stuff on a forum (4:2:2 vs 4:2:0, etc...) gives you no idea of how it actually preforms. I don't really like Sony's tactics and business plans but they have an excellent camcorder in the EX.

Spin? I think not. It is also a highly inaccurate analogy and incorrect.

I stand by that statement. I would rather have the XDCAM HD codec and an hour on the 16gb card than DVCPRO HD codec and 16 minutes on a 16gb card any day of the week.

As someone who has used both cameras extensively, the EX1 codec is astonishing. My results and my shorts speak for themselves. They have been heavily graded and withstood everything I have thrown at it. Including fast moving water.

If you have first hand experience to the contrary and more than happy to discuss. But, if you haven't I would stop ripping it apart and actually try it out. You will be very pleasantly surprised.

As I have said earlier. There will always be compromises in ANY camera, for me this camera it a gift for any cinematographer, filmmaker, videographer etc.

Philip,

Your wonderful footage does speak for itself, and has me truly convinced that the EX-1 is an amazing tool for creative professionals.

So please keep up the posts here and on your blog. I think that most are open mined and want to know all of the camera's pitfalls and capabilities.

Thanks,

Rob

That's weird!?!?

I just read your post but it seemed completely devoid of any objective or major information.

I can't tell if it's correct because there wasn't any data to evaluate. :undecided

But, in all seriousness, perhaps you could give us some detailed information on your position.

And, if possible, some real world footage examples.

Thank you so much in advance and all the best to you.

Great points.

The wool bowing on the sheep in Scotland was amazing as well Philip.

I am in love with the images you are showing from this cam.

As to the real world limitations and compromises we make, when you shoot in the city again can you try and get some strong flashing neon signs as well as some photo flashes to see what the limitations are.

I really want this cam for doc work.

I was also hoping to use it to film various tournaments leading up to the Olympics and they will undoubtedly be heavily flashed.

Just wondering under what circumstances I would need to use a different cam.

Thank you Philip.
By the way, your Blog is looking good.

XDCAM 35mb codec is awesome. No issues here.
Also, today, I put up a couple of my concert moving heads and captured a bit.

One test was the lights set to a strobe effect. I thought I would see the rolling shutter issue here, but to my surprise, there was no issue. I was using 1080 HQ 30P 1/60. I played back the footage and it looked good.

I will post this test soon.

I finally watched your footage on the Ex1

Awesome; really like it. Something tells me you could make magic with a cell phone.

I'm not an expert on Codecs and economics and care really care less. All I care about is what image I can get.

I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Philip, do you shoot in 720P for your variable frame rates?

Do you regularly shoot in 720P anyway?

Really nice posts, and footage, by Philip Bloom. Thanks for the (loving) info.

Please send out invites when you and the Ex tie the knot. :love4: (Take that out of the context, and it sounds like a line from a soap opera!)

It's pointless trying to draw conclusions on any codec's performance based only on numbers.

A good example is RED. It's about twice the data rate as the P2 format. Yet it's raw data for a 4k image. Some of the best eyes in the industry looked at the compressed vs the uncompressed footage and the compressed seems to have won the battle.

I'm looking forward to getting some hands-on with the EX1. I already have an HVX but am looking for a second camera. From the reports that everyone's been posting so far (thanks, eveyone), and from the brief time I actually had the camera in my hands recently, it all sure looks very promising.

My only complaint for now: No record-ahead cache.
