View Full Version : The Olympus E-system thread
As was suggested I am starting a thread for my uploads so as not to eat up too much real estate in the "Still Photography" thread. I am hoping all who shoot with Olympus E-System cameras will post here also:) Wouldn't you know it, I have nothing new to upload :D
OK...I'll start the new thread with these three taken on Canada day 2007:)

I find it interesting that you cropped your images instead of using the native 4:3 aspect ratio of the system.
Do you do that for all your images, or just for these?
I crop for a variety of reasons....beer cans floating in the foreground, blurry seagulls, just because I can and then these, to fill a three image frame I was given. :)

again Mino....great eye. You have, in my humble opinion, a knack for taking some absolutely slamming photos without making appear that you are trying too hard. Just very straight forward, beautifully composed, interesting shots. No funny business. I love 'em.
EDIT: By the way, if it doesn't rain Saturday, I am planning on going out to shoot. I'd LOVE to try my hand at HDR photography. I've never been too successful at it...I've tried it with 1 photo and afterwards....the photo was more evenly exposed but lacked something. Any insight as to what I should be considering? I'm thinking a subject matter with light and shadows? Not really sure....
Thanks!...To put it in perspective, my " knack for taking some absolutely slamming photos without making appear that you are trying too hard" is more likely a knack for picking some shots that work. I go out and shoot sometimes 150 or so shots and when I'm done I may have 1-5 that are worth a hoot. It's a selection process with me, 200 shots in an afternoon and in an evening review I'll narrow it down to two then maybe post one. I wish I could say every shot was a winner but then I'd be trying hard:)

Thats about my shooting ratio. Im not disheartened by where I choose to point my camera or even my comp really...my shortcomings mainly lie in getting the photo to represent how I see it or remember it. Thats between me, my camera, lens choice, and color correction I suppose...
Tomorrows weather report "Sunshine along with some cloudy intervals. Slight chance of a rain shower. High 58F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph." could be ideal. But I am trying to cram as much HDR info I can muster.

I love the one with the windows in it. I looks like 3d work. Its so strange, all the people that works in 3d tries to achive the most photorealistic shots that they can, and here we have, a photograph that looks 3d (or it may be that I'm starting to mix them).

Hot Damn. Love that.
Mino...how many of these do you HDR or do you HDR? And by HDR I mean either way....take 3 or more photos and blend them or take 1 photo and use photoshop to change their exposure to blend?
Very clear photo. My next cam/lens...gotta have some image stabilization features. This shot is beautiful...
EDIT: PS I forgot to mention...I LOVE that cow shot. And, you know what, I cannot explain why....
The cows and the old truck had a slight HDR treatment, the boat is straight from the camera with only levels adjustment and a tad of push on the blue. All of these were taken with my Olympus e-500 which has no OIS and I have buckets of fuzzy shots to prove it:) I got lucky with the boat as there was a sort of eye of the hurricane hole in the clouds that really set up some nice light.

I know I say this all the time...and I know you respond with "yeah, but there were 200 terribly blurry pictures to get this one"...but I don't care....I'll say it again. These shots are so frigging crisp. I love them. In fact, ALL the shots you post have a level of detail and crispness I can't seem to duplicate. Do you have a sharpening setup in cam that you tweak? or, luck?
And, I've never been anything but a canon or nikon guy. But I am really impressed with your Olympus shots....it really is the Indian...
Thanks...The corporate shots were all shot really quickly as I ha only about two weeks to shoot 35 corporations. I didn't have time to get into lit shots so I just took a camera mounted flash gun and bounced the light off the ceiling. The "time machine" shot at the top had lots of mercury vapor banks so the gun added some fill. The boardroom shot, I told them to pretend they were having a meeting, then I took three shots bouncing the flash on thee different angles till it looked more or less even. The artist shot had a nice big window for ambient so I just bounced off the ceiling to fill the shadows a bit. The "clock" on the wall was actually a wallpaper of some sort. The final shot was ambient with bounce flash off the roof for fill.

Actually I couldn't afford "200 terribly blurry pictures" on this project as I was the only person shooting and I had zero time for re-shoots. The e-510 really delivers some amazingly crisp shots especially it would seem where flash is involved, I've found the same to be true in good levels of natural light. I do add one shot of "sharpen" to most of my shots in PS as I find they get a bit lost when they are downsized. I really thought I'd bitten off more than I could chew when I took this gig and had a few nights of sheer terror realizing I had only one week left and three weeks work to do. Somehow I got it done and was able to flush the bus ticket to South America down the toilet:) There are ways to adjust the sharpness in cam I think but I've left most of the image settings at their default state.

The IQ is really quite high, and ... I don't think I will buy another body for quite some time. Years really, as the E3 is close to perfection in build quality too; not to mention I'm too far into the glass to look back:Drogar-Love(DBG):.

lol.
Actually, I have a rebel xti and am pretty dedicated to their lenses. However, the e-3 as well as the 40D and D300 are all a pretty big leap so its good to know that should that day ever come I will have another option. So far, I am really liking what I am seeing. I saw these interviews and it makes a pretty convincing argument for the E-3 system from professional photographers (you have to scroll down quite a bit). http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E3/E3A.HTM (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E3/E3A.HTM)
Right now, I have no official "committee" to consult but who knows, by the time I upgrade, I might have a committee with several constituents.
Thanks for the link, reading it does give one a warm and fuzzy feeling especially if you're using a 510 when reading it. This new camera is making me itch!! Still...realistically I've purchased more than my fair share of toys this year so I'll have to hide in the bushes for a while before I leap out with the "I need an E-3 rapidly" surprise ambush
To be honest, there is so much more I need to get comfortable with in an image control sense that buying the e3 right now would be a techy grab (It's new...I gottta have it!!) than something I really need....But hey!....If there's ever a couple of grand floating around that the committee hasn't allocated to some meaningful cause then.....Bam!!!...That cameras in the bag! :)

Thanks Rick. I think it probably depends on my shooting attitude as to how many I get. I notice that if I'm shooting casually my ratio goes down whereas if I'm being paid to shoot I get about 95% right. Mostly I shoot casually ergo the ton of gibberish images. The crow took time out to pose for this shot from his duty of trying to drive a big hawk out of that tree. I didn't notice this until I looked at a wider angle shot I took a few minutes later of this guy and his six brothers. Smack in the middle of this shot you can see a hawk surrounded by crows. I totally missed it until I looked at the shot at home. I'll post it for you in a few minutes. And yes...It's one of my garbage shots:)

Thanks Rick...The lighting on the last one was a little low on the subject but he was under a large bridge. I am going to upgrade to the e-3 sometime mid year. I love the fact that it's splash proof (I can shoot in the rain, a big plus in Vancouver:) and the articulating lcd screen, just like the DVX 100, it takes all my lenses and has a larger viewfinder. It also has the fastest autofocus system in the known universe this week! I would have to say I'm totally sold on Olympus cameras. To be fair though, I have never used any other DSLR cameras and I imagine most have their strengths and weaknesses. At it's price point though, I have to side with the e-510.

Mino these are beautiful! Can you share with us your pp?
Thanks Strancali. I mostly shoot with a 40-150 mm kit lens as it is the most versatile of my two lenses IMO. The reason I mention that as part of PP is that I quite often have a crop in mind when I take the shot so I really don't care what is outside the mental box I have inserted as the final image when I look through the viewfinder because I'm going to lose it in post. From there I adjust the levels manually as I find the auto levels is way off most of the time. Next, I adjust the overall color using PS selective color adjustment allowing a tweak of all colors individually. Occasionally an image gets a small amount of HDR treatment to enhance detail (as with the seagull/fish image above). Finally, after sizing the image down to web posting size, I add one shot of sharpen in PS to give back the crispness of the image I seem to lose when down sizing. Oh and I always add a border as I think it helps complete the image somehow. Hope that explains it:)

Very nice mino. You're right about borders in the photos. Some how that adds the final touch to it. I still have a lot to learn with PS. I just bought a 40D kit and I'm looking to buy a better lens but so far I'm very happy with the camera. I hope to produce some nice photos like yours one day.

Thanks guys...As I said, it was a fun challenge. To be honest, I overshot the time by 6.5 minutes (Damned old ladies tying up the elevators:) In retrospect, I would have liked to have gotten a more abstract shot but with my mental clock ticking I just went for the obvious. As far as filters go...I just added noise, jacked with the colors a tad and threw in a quick shadow in the lower area, nothing fancy.

I really need to post more. Well, I shoot an okay amount...usually weekly with that occasional lull for a few weeks. So, okay, I really need to shoot more...I usually go out and see what I can find to shoot...but that can get incredibly frustrating...driving around thinking..."is that a good photo?....nah....what about that....that 1 cow..........nah....." I usually know what strikes me as a good photo. I think the challenge one faces is turing a pretty scene into a breathtaking or worthy photo. Thats the skill. Enough blabbing.
Mino...I'm still interested in really dabbling with HDR though I recognize its not as easy as it seems. I've had many situations where I will combine the exposures and it will be ALL over the place in terms with exposure, gamma etc. So, I think its crucial to pick the right subject/lighting that warrants it. I'm learning and guessing anyway.
That top airplane shot...HDR? I can recognize some of the HDR halo effect and was wondering if it was HDR...and if so, on that shot did you use PS to manually adjust the original to create different exposures to run through the HDR processing machine? I'm still trying to figure out different possibilties and to see what techniques/subjects will yield the best results.
There is something about the detail in that shot that I love...

Out of all the pics in all the main camera threads, I think this one may be my favorite. The detail is astounding, the seperation of bird and background is incredible, the composition is perfect.
It almost looks fake, or maybe a better way to put it would be "hyper real". Not sure how you processed this to get it to look that way, but that photo just flat out kicks ass.
Great pic.
The detail, my god man. I can quit looking at it. I'm trying to figure out what about it is so appealing, it just has a quality many of your pics do that I can't isolate.
Your other photos in this thread are good (I especially like the Crab and the Seagul ones), please keep them coming.
Great work man.
This one turned out a bit flat so I gave it a little hdr shot and kinda liked the result. Maybe I over did it a tad...I'll experiment with it some more

Thanks Matt, I'm happy that you find this image so appealing. The e-510 is noted for getting great detail. If I recall correctly I pushed the green moss a little in that shot to help bring the crow out from the background. I may have used a little HDR for detail can't really remember. Looking at it I'd say I did. Again Thanks.

Hey Mino, the guy on the right, is that Barry Stone, the DP?
Not to my knowledge, he's a local artist who designs custom calenders and such for a large graphics house here. If memory serves me well his name is Ron something. I'll check into it for you though just in case Barry's doing some moonlighting:)
The company that had me shoot this one told me that all of the photographers who shot there before always got way dark results with no detail. When I gave them this shot they were astounded. This is a large tunnel borer being fabricated. This company built the borers that dug the Chunnel so they tell me. Edit: although I was told I could use any image I shot with this company anywhere I liked, I just received an e-mail that states I have to inform them of when and where which I have now to do. I have posted an older image in its place for now.

Mino-
I just watched your short. It did what I think you set out to do...very calming, very relaxing and beautiful. Was that DVX footage? And where did you aquire the piano might I ask?
Thanks Rick...Yes it was DVX footage, good old DVX100. The piano was provided by the talented Justin R Durban.
I have pulled all the shots I had posted as "paid shots" Although I had verbal permission to use them, instinct is telling me to get it in writing as they are corporate shots and "verbal" probably won't cut it in the legal sense. I'll put them back up if and when I get it in writing. One thing that spooked me just now was I phoned the company I had posted a shot from to ask for a written release and was told the person who gave her "Verbal" ok no longer worked at the company!!

I know in the US, if you haven't signed over rights to your photos...you own them. Even if people pay you to take them, or if you've given them limited use.
Thanks for your input Dan. A couple of calls here seem to suggest the same rule. I am left with the fact that I fully intend to work with some of these individuals in the future and will respect their wishes as to what images I use to demonstrate my shooting level to Joe public. One company builds cutting edge technologies in a highly competitive market, it probably isn't in their best interests to have shots of their product in pre-release state floating around willy-nilly on the web. I'll wait until I have their permission to put the stuff up. Call it a better judgment call on my part if for no other reason than to promote a healthy working relationship:)

The man is right. And to clarify further, posting on an internet forum for no gain of your own will not cause an issue with the subject. I'm at work now, but I have an awesome site at home that I'll try to post later. It will take you days to read all of it (well, at least if you read as slow as I do).

Yeah, Mino...I agree with him. There is something about your eye in your photos...its like "duh"...Like "why didn't I think of that photo?"...

This swan has a bit of a story behind it. I was walking down a trail toward the river to get a shot of a large cement factory posed in front of snow capped mountains. Where the trail broke before the river I came upon this swan preening itself on the shore. I know zip about these birds but I'm guessing this was a youngster. It let me get within two or three feet with my camera before slowly waddling away...Very trusting, perhaps too trusting I thought. I then noticed two very large birds of prey directly above tis young swan. Me being me, I decided this young swan was in danger as I thought maybe the big eagles would have him for supper when I left. So I herded the swan into the river figuring he'd be safer there than on the land. The silly thing went in the water for a few moments and came back out. Nothing I did would deter him. Figuring it for an English speaking swan I pointed up to the big birds in the tree and told it they were very bad for his health. The swan seemed not to care so I left it at that.
This is the cement plant I was on my way to shoot when I met the swan:)

Love all the shots of the boats on this page and the last ... just beautiful. I don't remember if you mentioned previously or not, but what lens(es) do you use for these shots?
Thanks Larry....These were shot with an Olympus 14-42mm & Tiffen haze filter. My other lense is a 40-150mm, both kit lenses that came with the Oly 500. I have also a 14-45mm that came with the e-510. I'd like to invest in a fast prime and also a 500mm zoom. Sometimes I can't get close enough to get good bird shots.
Larry R
02-18-2008, 04:57 PM
Wow, nice! They are so sharp and the colors are so brilliant I assumed it was a prime lens.
Any reason why you use the filter, rather than apply a "haze" in PS after the fact? I ask cause I had looked at several filters, but then figured they could all be replicated in PS, so it would be better to keep the shot "clean" in camera.
Anyway, great shots ... looking forward to more.
The haze filter doesn't create haze it just brings it out more in the shot. I find it works like a polarizer for clouds and mist...Any kind of haze. The sharpness of the image has to be credited to the e-510 and its OIS cos it was too cold by the river for me to hold that puppy steady....BRRrrrrrr!
Just reworked this image a tad to lose the tree and bring out more detail. I like it better. What's your take?

I think they both look great but to be honest, I think I like the original a tad more. I think getting rid of the tree was a good move. But the vignetting on the lower left hand corner of the new one is abrupt...on the original...it fades into the picture nicely. Also, the new one has bright spots and edges; the bluish glare off the water, the light hitting the wood, etc. This causes you to zoom in on one aspect of the photo. Makes the foreground seem more important than the background, when the ships in the back are pretty darn interesting.
But what I liked about the original is that it is so gray and drab throughout. The eye isn't drawn to any one particular item just the picture as a whole...plus a little more contrast and some crushed blacks and I'm thinking of a scene from a classic 40's flick with Bogart or Tracy. Thats just my opinion of course...
Thanks Rick....All valid points, funny, I thought the second one looked like a scene from the original "MYST" game. I have left the mood intact on the final below and only removed the trees.

PS...I deicate this image to my Mother who passed away a couple of weeks ago and I've called it "The final voyage" My GF thinks it's a bit heavy LOL, but I think it suits the mood well!

I just reworked this shot as it was bugging me for a while that I had pushed it too far in my early attempts at HDR. My complaint is now only with the fact this bridge only carries a commuter train and the traffic bridge right next to it needs twinning or replacing. Thanks SCHEN... I do shoot with the 510 since upgrading from the 500. I still keep the 500 around but it rarely comes out of the bag. I can't imagine parting with either camera with the exception of selling them off at some point to buy the e-3. Anyway, love the shots ... makes me want to run out and take some more ... need to get some better glass though :)
Thanks Larry. Mr. Gull here was given a slight HDR push for detail enhancement and then auto levels was applied in PS along with selective color adjustment also in PS. Please excuse my ignorance. I know about HDR, I've done some of my own bracketed HDR photos (though I didn't really know what I was doing in the software, just taking defaults, etc) ... but when you say this:
...given a slight HDR push for detail enhancement...
what do you mean? What did you do to "give a slight HDR push"?
And, thanks for the "before" ... nice to see the contrast, though still a very clear picture, but the enhancements really make it "pop" ... and of course, a good eye by the guy behind the camera to grab a good pic in the first place :)
What I mean is not driving with a heavy hand in photomatix and pushing the image too far as in the image below. I dial in as little as possible, just enough to enhance the detail of the feathers, sand etc.
http://www.redzonefilms.com/pics/gull%20over.jpg
This is NOT a slight HDR push but a major malfunction in PP IMHO. I do see now and then an image such as this in some forums, in my books it's too much.

Great pics Mino. Larry R asked what I wanted to ask also about HDR. Appreciate your answer but I'm still not clear. I understand HDR to be "stacking" various exposures of the exact same image and playing with opacity of each layer. After this process something called tone mapping is done. Are you interchanging these terms or are you actually using two or more exposures of the same shot? Plus tone mapping? Does your camera allow for storing multiple exposures of the same shot off of one shot?
Thanks .....

Thanks Matt, I was out on the Hovercraft for 4 hours today shooting a joint training simulation with local police, fire rescue and ambulance service today. The hovercraft got called away for a real distress call. The old DVX and I never had so much fun. The water was a bit choppy and we were almost full speed so you'd be sort of weightless for a second or so going over the swells. When we landed I broke out the Olympus to get a few stills of the craft. Last week I was burning around the city in an ambulance doing 911 code 3 calls. The whole project has been a gas so far!

Geez Louise, that does sound like a lot of fun. I've always wondered what it felt like to be on a hovercraft. Did you happen to get any footage or stills when you were on your way to the call? Or did you pack everything away so it had no chance of getting splashed (what I would have done because I am paranoid about my gear)?
The DVX never stopped rolling, I got two full tapes plus. As soon as the project is done I'll find time to post some footage for you. Once you're out on the water and the doors are closed there is no water anywhere inside the craft, kinda like being in a land/sea based aircraft. Lighting was an issue as it's low light inside and very bright outside so a lot of interior stuff is dark. I should have opened the iris more and blown out the exterior view for better interior stuff...Live and learn it was!:) The only other issue was that there was no room for a tripod so all the stuff is hand held but I found if you sort of flow with it you can get fairly good results. Yes it's bouncy looking but then that's exactly what is was....Bouncy!

Mino - Finally got photomatix and was able to do multi-exposure HDRs ... but couldn't figure out how to do it with a single image, as you've mentioned several times. Any chance you can explain how? :)
Thanks
Hey Larry....I'm using Photomatix 2.3.1 though I think this method works for the later versions with small variations. I use SHQ jpeg's for my source files. When photomatix is opened you'll see a tab at the top "Automate" click on it and choose batch processing, check the box that says 'Generate HDR image, choose 1 for the box that says "select X image at a time" Then select the file you want to convert in the location box and finally click on "RUN". Photomatix will generate an image ready for tone mapping and place it in a folder called "Photomatix results" or some such thing. Use Photomatix to open the generated image in that folder and tone map away! Hope this helps.

All three have the same amount of sharpening which is my standard treatment after I melt the final image down to screen post size 800X600, I add one shot of the sharpen filter to snap the image back from the jpeg downsize blues. No special or further sharpening was applied to that image.

Mino, I've also noticed that in a lot of your photographs there is usually (all though sometimes small) aliasing like below. is this just a result of a downrez or does it present itself during a diff part of your workflow? thanks in advance.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7912/1208891008.jpg
Interesting point. The full on file has no signs of this so my guess is it's a downrez issue. If I zoom in and out on the original I get the same result to varying degrees especially on straight lines and such. There is an optimum point in the zooming where it's gold and all lines look perfect. I would guess it's some kind of resolution issue and there's probably a technical fix concerning the image size one chooses to post. I'm an 800X600 kind of guy but hey maybe another size would resolve this issue. I'll do some tests in the future. Thanks for spotting the problem.
PS...You indicate that a lot of my photographs share this problem, can you be more specific as to which ones? I'd like to get this issue fixed but I'm not seeing a "lot" of the images with this issue:)
So here's a test with the same image posted at 1000 pixels in width which may clean the problem away.
http://www.redzonefilms.com/pics/testline.jpg
No issues on my monitor at this size so I'm thinking it's a resolution issue. How does it look to you Eqproductions?
egproductions
04-23-2008, 09:28 AM
I still notice it...When you are editing you photos in photoshop you will see aliasing unless you are viewing at 100%. Anything aside from that is going to interpolate or extrapolate pixels. Also you should be using the native resolution of you monitor for accurate pixel representation. But it's odd that it is happening. I used to notice it a lot in your earlier pictures of modern building (porbably cuz there were a lot of diagnal and converging lines.
and please..call me EG

http://www.mindtapmedia.com/pics/can1.jpg
Monitors are running native res and I figured out the 100% view in PS years ago. I had just never really thought about it once I'd posted an image until you pointed it out. To counter the problem, I am no longer taking pictures of anything that has straight or diagonal lines in the frame.

This wine glass has been in this same spot for months, when the tide goes out it's always there, in the same spot.

Which E-series camera and lens do you use? Your images have that Adobe Photoshop nonsense in the EXIF info.
My main squeeze is the e-510, I own an e-500 also but rarely use it. lenses are all Zuiko 4/3 and include 14-45mm 1:3,5-5,6, / 40-150mm 1:3,5 -4,5 and a 70-300mm 1:4-5,6
I think the EXIF data goes away when one goes HDR such as in the last shot of the wine glass.

Ah, that makes sense. I had scrolled to the bottom of the page when I decided to check out the EXIF info, and the other files do indeed have the camera and lens info.
That's one of the better HDR images I've seen, they are usually easy to spot because they look so overprocessed. I didn't even realize that the last image was HDR until you pointed it out.
I've got three E-series cameras, a venerable E-300, an E-510, and an E-3. Olympus rocks!
The e-3 is on my wish list at this point slated to purchase this fall or next spring. I almost picked up another 510 the other day so I could avoid switching my lenses so much. That was the idea when I got the 510 as a mate for the 500 but the 500 isn't the same joy as the 510 so it just whimpers quietly in the bag more often than not:)
This one was in my garbage file but I realized that it went with the one I posted earlier of the building on the water with the sail structures. From the spot I took that image, if you were to turn 180 degrees you would see exactly this image.

Driving by the airport today I saw this aircraft do a missed approach so I tromp it and head for the end of the runway. The aircraft landed safely but was followed down the runway by fire trucks and safety vehicles and parked for a few minutes just off the runway. I'll always wonder what the problem was.

Nothing seemed wrong here

Here's an extreme blowup of a really long shot (the length of the airfield) you can see the fire trucks closing in on the aircraft and also a couple of ground crew watching me?

As soon as the jet passed over this yellow truck the chase was on!

If I had to guess I'd say the crew of the aircraft didn't have three green lights on the landing gear and did a fly by for a ground visual inspection that's why there were four or five guys at the runway thresh hold. It was probably a false indicator light in the cockpit. Once the ground guys confirmed the gear seemed to be down and locked, the aircraft landed safely and was received by the entourage of fire trucks as normal protocol for this type of event.

So Mino, you have this monstrous bear pouncing on you and you take the time to get that shot. Amazing.
Also, very funny. :)
