View Full Version : DOF difference?

Is the DOF noticable between the new sony ex and say a XHA1 or any 1/3 inch chip? Or is it very slight so a 35mm adapter is still the way to go?

Not talking about anything else like noise assuming enough light well lit, wide open at the same zoom/f-stop settings.

you will get shallower depth of field but nowhere near what 35mm provides, so yes... if you want 35mm dof, then you need a 35mm adapter. But, it is noticeable over 1/3" from what I have heard. But, closer to that end of the spectrum than it is 35mm.

You know, maybe it is because I have never actually seen them side by side, but when I shoot with the F350 (1/2" chips too) I never have thought to myself, "man, I wish my DVX have this same DoF." I find it just as hard to go shallow on things like interviews or narrative pieces in average sized rooms, just like the 1/3" chips.

Well using my EX1 I can definately notice the DOF can be tighter for a given FOV over the 1/3 cams, but I do agree it's still far from the 35mm adapter stuff.

do note that... 35mm adapters do work with the EX1.

DoF on the EX1 is about one stop shallower than on a 1/3" camera for a given field of view.

So if you've framed up an object with the EX1 at f/2.8, and you frame the same object up exactly the same with the HVX, compensating on the zoom to make the shot identical, you would have equivalent DoF at about an f/2.

So it's noticeably different but not significantly different.

DOnt expect a great difference for DOF between 1/3" and 1/2" sensor. Even 2/3" sensor will not provide you the 35mm DOF. So, yes , you probably still need a 35mm adapter.

I disagree. Owning both an f350 and ex1 the dof is noticeably shallower than my z1

But of course a letus or brevis makes a world of difference.

philip... way to exclude the M2, SG Pro, and P&S Technik! (just being picky here)

The real coolness factor hits when you're using a 35mm DOFA with PL Mount lenses!

whoops! Just talking about what I own and use!

One day I will get some pl mount lenses...

I have Zeiss ZF Primes myself. They have grade A top notch stuff! One day I hope to own a Zeiss PL Prime set!
