hi , I am looking at a z1u and a fx1 , I notice that the z1u has a dvcam mode. Is dvcam better than sd?

Nope.
The DVCAM signal is exactly the same as the DV signal.

The only differences are in physical tape speed, and the tape stock (by spec) thoguh the same tapes can be used fully interchangeably between DV and DVCAM.

Doesn't the DVCAM spec include locked audio, while DV does not?

yeah, there are some tiny little differences like that too. Though I believe locked can go either way, and neither format cares.

If you *really* want to know the differences, then you've gotta check with the guru: http://www.adamwilt.com/DV-tech.html :)
