Film interests me more than anything, so I'm applying to film school. My two main choices are USC and California Institute of the Arts. Both require an 'artistic statement'. Has anyone written one of these before? If you could please comment on mine help would be appreciated. Here is what I have so far:
Artist’s Statement
An artist’s statement is very important in the admissions process. Please use this statement to discuss the issues and concerns that inform your art making practice, your reasons for applying to Cal Arts and your artistic goals. Some programs have additional specific requirements (please see Specific Program Requirements (http://box.calarts.edu/admissions/applycalarts/specificprogramrequirements)). When applying on line, this statement should be submitted with your electronic application.
Einstein and gravitation, Chiesa and film. Once every century or so someone rises to improve their craft. Einstein would have no theory without Newton's apple. Chiesa would have no passion without 35mm film. Just when the world thinks everything is known someone comes along and changes their view. My dream is to make films which challenge people and alternate the way they see something because I have shown it in a new way.
Since the first day I played with a camera I knew that film was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Dressing my little brother up in various costumes and filming all over the house was a normal weekend night. For multiple characters we would shoot one scene with him as a detective and the next with him in a dress, or what ever the scene needed. To be able to see my vision on the big screen is and always has been the dream of mine. I also loved to do the special in camera effects. Have someone walk on screen and then hit the pause button and quickly hurry them out of the shot. You shoot the same scene without him and poof it looks like he disappeared; he could even reappear. Creating a film like this (writing, producing, directing, acting and editing) gives me a sense of accomplishment. Without this passion I would not have the drive to excel in life.
Making a movie means working with both my mind and spirit. I want to create films or moving images that take hold of people and make them think. Today big films rarely succeed without million dollar special effects. It needs to be the ideas and the reason for the film being made for people to go see it. Most go to see a movie so they can escape reality, and today's media is plagued by fads and reality television. As an artist I hope to be able to bring a sense of pride back to movie making. Having money these days doesn't always mean you will be the only one heard. With the current rise in Internet usage anyone has the chance to say something. People can collaborate from city to city and even country to country. These types of connections that form strengthen any film as other people's experiences add to the project.
As an artist I hope to expand my area of inspiration. By living some where much different than my home town I can draw from new experiences. All parts of life should contribute to your passion and goal or why else would you need to experience them? Each step should be made in a forward direction and this can only be done as you grow. I know that Cal Arts will help me grow as an artist because of all the various levels I can explore. From film to animation and on to music everything I learn will add to my skill in movie making. For a film to be successful everyone contributing should know something about the other's area of work. This way when it comes together the pieces will fit perfectly and the entire picture will form just like a puzzle.

I think the majority of this is good, but the hook is a little awkward.

I know what you're trying to get across, but it just doesn't flow.

Good luck.

You refer to yourself as an artist several times, but you dance around what that means to you.

Dig deep here. WHY do you have a passion for art (and don't limit it to film)? WHY when it gets tough will you not lay down? The how and why are the most important things I would want to know.

something to keep in mind: USC is will respond less to a 'film as art' angle and more to a 'film as entertainment' angle. at least that was true in and around 1997. i would expect it to be more true nowadays.

a quick other question.

when submitting my portfolio to CALARTS do you think it would be better to send an epiremental type video like on www.chi3sa.com OR
a narrative film with actors and plot directed and edited by me
?
