What were you shooting with?

triplej96
11-19-2007, 11:13 PM
Pentax K10d DSLR.
10.1 mega pixel, 18-55mm lens nost sure about the fstop and shutter or iso but that info is embedded in the file. Seems I'm the only one on this board with a Pentax K10D. I almost got a Nikon but I just loved the feel of this Pentax. I'm uploading a few more photos right now. These was the first time I took my DSLR for a spin. All of the pictures that I have uploaded are shot in full manual mode.

Nice shots man... I love B&W when it's done well.

Hey I'm probably right down the street from you by the way. I'm in Saint Peters also.

If you drive down 94 to Klondike Park you'll see some AMAZING opportunities for lone tree pictures... I'm talking just like the logo for whatever the heck it is... the film company that has the lone tree on the road that gets struck by lightning... there are corn fields down there that have dirt farm roads through them... and there are two different places where lone trees come to mind.

Also... if you live in this area and haven't been to Klondike yet... wow... you are really missing something. It's a photographer's dream. You almost won't even think that you're still in Missouri!

Wow that park sounds great thanks for the info Martinstl. Man I have never been to Klondike I will for sure go there now. I'm pretty excited now! I live off Mid Rivers Mall Drive next to St. Peters Howel Rd oh and glad you like the photos.

Yeah I'm only a couple miles from you...

When you go to Klondike you're gonna' sh*t... at first it doesn't seem like there's very much to do there, but as you start digesting the scenery it starts to creep up on you... and pretty soon you realize that it's pretty darn amazing to have this place so close.

The park really changes a lot with the seasons too... there are several little golden details that you'd miss w/o somebody telling you to check it out.

Obvious things are:

1) You gotta' hike up to the overlook. It's not hard to find... just look for the highest point you can get to... behind the house.

2) Check out the lake and the floating bridge... the lake is way low now. It's much more attractive when it's full. Notice the white "bluffs" behind it... also all the white sand and rock structures.

3) When you come to the first parking lot for the lake... take the first RIGHT away from the lake... drive all the way back and check out the paths that are lined with pine trees... in the summer these areas are freakin' great.

4) At the end of that path notice the "hidden rock quarry" area behind it... this is best explored with some waterproof boots... it may be dry right now...?

5) There is also a second look-out directly OVER the lake... but it's not really that impressive compared to the other one.

All together you'll see that this park is kinda' small as you drive through it, but it's pretty big as soon as you park and start hiking... and the best part is, there is usually VERY FEW PEOPLE around! On some days it seems like you have the whole place to yourself.

Oh yeah... when you're by the lake and the pine tree trail... check out those little cabins! Are those cool or what? You can RENT those per night! Sooner or later I'll be shooting something in one of those... they are TOO PERFECT for any "cabin in the woods" stories... I mean TOO PERFECT... you'll see. Maybe I need a love-fest story that involves a cabin.

As in untouched RAW files? I have only shot in RAW mode thus far which means I "develop" my digital negative in Adobe Camera RAW. Do you want to see like a straight RAW file with no adjustments or a RAW file with just auto adjustments or maybe I can shoot a few jpeg for you? Correct me if I'm wrong (New to photography) but it seems when you shoot RAW it doesn't do any in camera enhancing? So maybe an untouched RAW file would be deceiving?

I realize that I am not going to get the full sense of the camera unless I take a picure and analyz a few raw files but if you could just take a raw picture and just do basic raw adjustments to correct exposure, white balance and basic contrast using black levels but don't crush the blacks or oversaturate or anything like that. A lot is going to be effected by the lens you are using but I just want an idea if you don't mind. Thanks

Also does the shutter sound like a machine gun like on the canon 5D or more electrical like on the rebel xt?
(The sound that a cameras shutter makes reminds me of how car manufacturers intentially make sure the engine and the doors of a car sound a specific way)

triplej96
11-22-2007, 12:29 AM
Yeah I will post something for you with basic raw adjustments and as far as the shutter I can't hear anything at all.

This is interesting. My wife has developed an interest in some casual photography, and she's outgrown her trusty Canon S410. So, I was thinking of going up a bit, but don't want to spend a ton of $ just now. I may buy something early next year, around March.

I was looking at a few cameras, and I really like the Canon EOS 40D (I've always been a Canon man, heh, heh), but it's a bit too much $, especially when you factor in having to buy lenses etc.

The other options I was looking at were the Olympus E-510, the Nikon D80, and the Sony DSLR A100.

I kept coming back to the K10 - it's just such a bang for the buck, it's actually quite competitive with the Canon EOS 30D for a lower price point.

I've read up on the various options in this price range on dpreview, and there are only a couple of things that worry me about the K10 - it supposedly has dust-removal system, but I've read more than one person who say that it's a rubbish system that doesn't really work... and dust is a killer once it gets on the sensor, you basically got a brick on your hands. The other thing, is that most folks say that this is not a camera for someone who has never had a DSLR before (like my wife).

Opinions from you personally based on your experience?

P.S. I was also thinking of waiting for the January announcement of the followup K20, to see what's available.

Hey oldcorpse I don't have much time right now to explain but the K10D is a fantastic camera. Yes there is a learning curve if new to photography or video. I thought about the Canon 40d and Nikon d80/d200 but decided on K10D and haven't looked back. For example these were my first photos with the K10D and well this was my first still photography ever so I hope the photos speak for themselves :). I am experienced with video so the transition was pretty smooth to still photography. Hope that helped. Oh, I haven't had a chance to try the dust removal system but I do know the shake reduction system is amazing it is built into the camera not the lens. So you can use an old lens (I got one for 25$ with shipping) and still reap the shake reduction benefits!

I was on the way home from shopping on Sunday and happened to have my camera. I stopped and took this photo of a sunset with church in the distance. It was stormy earlier in the day and I just liked seeing some of the storm clouds within the sunset. A silhouetted church is always nice. Thanks a lot Larry glad you like the images. You are right there are many ways to do the b&w conversion methods. For me it is important to shoot in RAW as I'm sure you know. First, inside CS3 Camera RAW I did some processing setting my main exposure working with contrast, brightness. Then inside Camera Raw I also brought my saturation all the way down making it B&W just to check the image. Before I bring it to PS I bring the saturation slider back to 0. I never actually turn it B&W inside Camera Raw I do that in PS.

I bring the photo into PSCS3 and I use a channel mixer adjust ment layer with the monochrome box checked. Then play with the sliders in the channel mixer to get your look. I also used a polarizer filter for these shots.

I feel a lot more comfortable with my camera and just photography in general. This was my third time going out with my camera and I just felt a lot more confident. Photography is very new for me but I think it is much easier going video to photography as oppose to photography to video.

Actually using HDR less and less in favor of PS-PP. I still use it to give drama to cloudy skies and stuff. I almost depended on it with the e-500 but the 510's Panasonic sensor seems to work just as well with levels and selective color adjustment I'm finding.

I shoot raw, so anything is possible, but my intension in that, shadow on left and light from the sun at right! ;)

LOVE that shot. Something about the eyes makes me just stare at it.

One thing though... the blowout on the right side of your(?) nose is really distracting. Is there any way to bring back a little detail there? What's the original look like?

That is my favorite out of the bunch too, great shot! I agree I would like to see some more detail on the right side of the nose as well.

Glad to see another pentaxian!

Yo trip! Add a little grain and various crap to that and it will look exactly like something from the 20's. That contrast is screamin. A screamin fiend demon, and looks like kick my ass!

The penguin one is classic. Reminds me of old time dudes in their tuxes goin out for a night on the town.

Mind the masking out of the blur at the base of the foreground fellow. There's a bit of an edge.

Great photos. The bear looks lonely. Poor wittwe guy!

Yo Yo! lol Which one are you talking about, the 20's look? The bear? New York building?

Thanks for the compliments Matt! Your penguin comment has me laughing. That is great lol.

You are right about the edge on the foreground I must fix that now!

Now I need to get cracking on my CGfest entry.

thanks again
Josh
