I have a low-budget horror/comedy, or a dark comedy, coming up and there are several sound effects that I want to record through the camera.
This is the question, with a AT897 Shotgun to line 1 is the recording of higher quality on the P2 card or on the MINI-DV tape?
Thanks in advance for your help.....

Both P2 and DV use uncompressed PCM audio -- the quality is the same.

As I was thinking about it; wouldn't you loose a 'generation' of quality when you use the MINI-DV tape to transfer the sound to digital?

No it is recorded in digital to tape & simply transfered to your computer. It is not recompressed

No because the sound is digital on the tape.

So, do the record settings for the video, 1080i, 720p, 480p, effect the audio, other than the intervalometer and the frame rates?

No. All of the audio recordings are 48KHz uncompressed PCM for DV25, DVCPro 50, and DVCPro HD.

I can't find anymore hairs to split. Thanks for your help. This is the right place to go....!

48kHz PCM channel is okay, it is what is possible with HVX (and lot of cams).
Today's pro digital audio recording uses 96kHz & 192 kHz PCM channel.

When you have to combine HVX audio with other (higher rate) sources for audio postprod, it may be noticeable.

Well, that is very interesting. I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. Is there anyway to resolve this possible conflict in this NLE?

What conflict?

There is no conflict. What Jenny is saying is that today's higher end recording decks can record sound on 96khz and 192 khz PCM, which is higher quality than most cams.

You will only be able to tell this difference when having the sounds from the HVX played against sounds recorded at the higher rate. If you're not using a high end audio deck and are recording directly to the HVX or are using something like a DAT deck, then i doubt you will hear the difference.

Personally, I dont have the greatest ear and will freely admit i can't tell the difference between anything aboce 48khz PCM unless its an A/B test where i am specifically looking for the sound difference.

Either way, I doubt its something you'll have to worry about with your film Sisuman.
