View Full Version : The Difference Between Romance and Pessimism By Matt Kieley

This is for a rough idea I just had for Love Fest:

In the middle of shooting a romantic comedy, film director Eli is dumped by his girlfriend/lead actress for her male co-star. Eli then renounces love, rejects the concept of romance, and is unable to bring himself to finish the film. He confides in Jeannie, the impulsive, beautiful, and unique female writer of the film, who takes it upon herself to rescue Eli from pessimism, and convince him that there's still romance in the universe.

I figure I'll reserve a post specifically for a production journal...

And another super duper special one, just for grabs and production stills.

I have begun to write the script. I'm about four pages in, and not even half-finished yet.

Dum, dum, dum dum, dum, dum dum, dum, dum, dum, duuuuummmmm. :cheesy:

I don't know about you, but when it comes to short films, I seem to only think in 10 minute ones.

Just finished the first draft, at 9 pages. A lot of people mentioned how my last film had a Wes Anderson feel, and I suppose I was channeling him somewhat, though not consciously. I think this time I've channeled Woody Allen.

What about 8 1/2? We're talking the Fellini film, right, and nothing disgusting I hope?

The ever-talented Herman Witkam will be doing the score and sound design.

Herman just sent me the music, and it is outstanding. This man has some serious range as a composer, not that I'm surprised though.

Dude!!
I was just breezing through your thread so I could get to the end of it to post how much your last film reminded me of Wes Anderson. I'm so excited to see that I wasn't the only one!

Wes Anderson is my favorite filmmaker of all time. I absolutely adore his work and could watch each one of his films over and over again. -- I love your taste in film, Matt. You've got a great eye and I see many similarities between the two of us. (As far as tastes go) -- Really really looking forward to this flick, man.

Also, let me know if you'd still like me to do that poster for your past entry. I'd also LOVE to design one for this film as well if you don't already have it taken care of.

Great work, man. I'm pumped.

Kyle

Thanks, man.

And you should definitely do the Art of Suicide poster. I replied to your PM last week, but wasn't sure if it was clear that I wanted you to. And I don't have a poster for this yet either. So you can definitely take a crack at both of them if you want.

I gave this script to an actress friend. She's going to show it to her actor friends. Hopefully I'll be able to get a cast and shoot by early January.

not exactly what I would associate with the word "love"
but it's all about getting outside the box, right?
we're also shooting in early '08 so I will wish you the best

Glad someone is interested. So far, no updates. I'm knee deep in casting my feature film. I'm most likely going to use whoever I cast in that film, for my love fest entry. I figure we can probably make it quickly, in time for the deadline, before the big project. I'll probably have a cast by beginning of February. We're going to rehearse all month, so we'll probably use the first week to work on my entry on the side.

What about 8 1/2? We're talking the Fellini film, right?

Yeah, it has some similarities in the story line, a director becomes obsessed with
an actress and can't finish his film. It's a bit more complicated because the
director's wife and mistress are also on the set, and there's no happy end.

I think it's fun to refer to the classics and include little references to them.
