I'm doing some preliminary research on this.

I'm planning on shooting a short film, in the range of 10 minutes or so. *I'll be shooting DVX100A in 24P(A) with the 16x9 anamorphic adapter. *I plan on cutting and finishing the project entirely on Avid Xpress Pro.

I'd like to take that master video and transfer it to 35mm film. *Then I'd like to transfer the film back to video.

Would somebody break down the costs for me? *And also recommend a place (preferably in LA) where I might find the best deal? *In addition, what might I expect with the results of each conversion?

Any help and advice with any of this woud be greatly appreciated.

Transferring DV up to film is around $300 per minute.

Transferring 35mm down to DV is done at a telecine house at a rate of anywhere from $150 to $900 per hour, depending on the colorist, the machine used (a Rank, or a Millennium, or a Spirit, etc). You can normally get about a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio doing full scene-to-scene color correction, meaning you could transfer 15 to 20 minutes of source footage in an hour's time at the telecine suite.

To add...

anyone considering getting a 35mm or 16mm telecinie transfer should consider whether it might be useful to transfer the footage to a higher standard video format (like say, digibeta) and then strike a DV clone from that video master instead of going directly to DV, or (shudder to think) miniDV.
