looks kinda like a chimera "birdcage" lantern - but its not.

why do you ask? seems to me its just another environment light for another use...

Yea it looked a bit similar to the chimeras birdcage. These lights looked akward and with its cage, wich sparked me an intrest. I hoped that i could get some inputs on the light, if it was just an enviroment and not at all for the "scene. If its just for the enviroment its not much of an interest.
Im about to build a studion (on tight bugdet), thats why im looking at lights.

I think that they use them to create softlight over the set. Usually in the bts of many films you can see them hanging around the set.

It's called a space light. That one in particular has a skirt on it to control the spill and direct it downward. On the low/medium budget things I've worked on they have been used mostly to light for greenscreen. I've also seen them used on a large forrest set to bring up the overall illumination with a nice soft source. They are basically 3 or 6 (I believe) nooklites inside a diffusion cylinder.

A show I do uses five of these plus banks of Divas for side fill.

I liked the idea with the skirt on to control the spill and direct it downward. Its probely going to be alot of testing to set up the lights to be able to light the greenscreen seperatly.

How do you convert ire to lux? I have a friend thats going to caclulate the lux falling onto the greenscreens surface to know where to put each light. I know you can't almost not get to much light but how many lux would you recomend. I would like to be able to shot with 1/120 and maby even 1/250 shutter.

I think the word you are looking for is "recognize", but you could "record nice" footage with some good film lights :)
