11-18-2007, 08:48 AM
thanks guys. I am experimenting with using a SUPER simple plot in a hopefully interesting way. I was really struck by that in films like "No Country," and "A Simple Plan." This is not a money in a bag story, but I am working with an equally simple set-up.
I think Timur is WAY too busy to shoot on this with me, so if anyone wants to exchange labor, gimme a shout.

Scouting locations in rural OHIO, the little town where my mom lives. I still have not decided if i am going to stage it here for sure, but I was inspired by the Cohen Bros film to look at a country locale:

http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/lfe/eurekawide.jpg
http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/lfe/mainstreet.jpg
Script is coming. Am getting feedback from several trusted sources now, and honing it down to the bone.

Cool location.
No title yet?
Mark Harris
11-25-2007, 03:11 PM
I was thinking of just "LOVEFEST ENTRY" but something about that sounds a little dirty...
Mark Johnson
11-25-2007, 03:52 PM
Damn, that is a wonderful looking location, Mark. Have you shot there before? Do you think the locals will embrace a big city filmmaker?
Mark Harris
11-25-2007, 04:04 PM
Well, the town is so small, I can go shoot on Main Street at night and no one will even know i was there, probably. I am going to call the mayor's office and get the details. But since my step dad's family has been here for like 7 generations, I think I can just tell them who's kid I am and they will be like: "Oh Terry's son? Sure!" The sheriff lives next door :)
http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/lfe/sheriff.jpg
The whole thing really hinges on whether I can get the talent here, either from NYC or Cleveland or somewhere else. For no money. Phrase it like a long weekend in the country :)
Mark Johnson
11-25-2007, 06:22 PM
Man, that looks like fun. I wager you will have no trouble pulling in talent from Cleveland once you share your script. You always stuff that operates at a level that actors can get into it and I'm sure this will be no exception.
Mark Harris
11-25-2007, 07:20 PM
Thanks Mark, I am working hard to perfect the script now, and hoping to start reading some actors in NYC in the next couple of weeks.
Tom Marshall

Mark, that location looks really cool. The whole "small town" feel to it. What's the population?

Mark Johnson
11-26-2007, 12:23 PM
11:40 ...... Sorry for the threadjack. ... Mark, my hometown is 2,400 and I absolutely think that's optimum for a project like this. Big enough to have a cafe and bar with pooltable but small enough to only have one cop car and one streetlight.

These are all veterans of our comedy series. But also, all are trained actors and read very very well for the roles.
To a large degree, I am lifting the costuming from this John Tuturro film:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/graphics/2006/03/24/bfturturro24.jpg
http://www.showbusinessweekly.com/images/451/Film_RomanceCigaretts.jpg
http://img5.allocine.fr/acmedia/medias/nmedia/18/35/62/55/18431882.jpg
Very blue collar, but with some noir-ish lighting again. I like the harsh tones in the lights.
Also, there will be wood paneling and possibly a leopard print blanket. :)
And if we have THE MASTER(Timur) in the mix...as they say in bklyn, FUGGETABOUTIT.
Yeah, I'm posting on X-mas, but the Roast is cooking and there's nothing else to do right now...

Not really any crazy stories. Really smooth shoot so far. Timur kicked it out on the camera. The actors really settled into what I gave them. The prod design is pretty consistent so far.
Tomorrow is a much more complicated shoot though, so maybe there will be some weirdness there...
Footage backed up to 3 HDDs, of course. I'm paranoid that way...

I can't exactly tell what you did. Desaturated a little?
The main aesthetic I was going for on this film was "No Country For Old Men." Very natural, motivated lighting. The desat works. I am going to stay away from any kind of goofy CC work.
We're going to to what's right for the scene with adapters. This first day was all shot with Timur's "Franken-Pro" SGPro version 1/version2/version xyz hybrid. But in today's scene I am going to want deeper DOF, so it may not buy us anything to shoot this with it, etc...

Also, anyone in NYC reading this thread, it's likely I will have to purchase prod insurance. So if you need some too, and want to go in on it, or even just pay me an amount per day for permits, and use mine, let me know. i am going to try to recoup the cost by spreading it out this way.

Hey you,
Beautiful grabs and nice production stills. It's looking like stiff competition. Love it. Good luck cutting it down. Any chance we're gonna get to see a "director's cut" after the fest?
Mark Harris
01-25-2008, 11:07 AM
yeah, absolutely. The story can basically work in 6 min, but it just feels like you don't get to settle in with the characters as much. Feels more rushed and less like its own world. We'll see after Monday when I get the last scenes shot...
Zak Forsman
01-25-2008, 11:46 AM
i'm running into the same situation. rushing through kind of kills the piece. so I am likely cutting the first act and letting the audience come into it with some gaps to fill in for themselves.
Mark Harris
01-25-2008, 04:33 PM
Yeah, that's a good plan. not sure I can get away with it myself though. The dialog in this is so minimal and indirect you kind of need to see every scene to know what's what...Hmmm

Once again, beautiful grab! My only minor gripe with this one is realism. It seems far too smoky for an almost empty bar. Me thinks the fog machine was working overtime.
Even if it was full, it would have had to of been full just moments before this shot, with a LOT of smokers. :D
That doesn't really matter though, it really adds atmosphere to the shot.

well it's true. Adding those shafts of light with the smoke was a last minute choice when we got there. And with time constraints, we could not wait longer between takes for the smoke to dissipate. But I chalk it up to low budget filmmaking.

So we have a title. Timur came up with "CONSTANCE." I am a big fan of single word titles and titles that match names of characters. And this title has meaning in the story as well.

Awesome. CC is the fun part, eh? Out of curiosity, how are you guys handling the sound mix? I'm a bit worried about that part since it was so time consuming on my last project. Do you have a dedicated guy, Mark? Or do you just handle it yourself as far as cleanup, levels, and mixing?
Thanks and good luck.

Well in the past others have done it. Herman did it on Bloody Mary. Joe Johnson did it for me once. I think this time, I will clean up the audio as best I can, then pass it off to someone to do the foley etc. Then I think Herman will do the final mix with his score. But if I do not get someone to do the foley, etc., yeah, it's me.

People often ask: "Mark, how do you get crew to come work on your films?"
Simple. I pay in women.
Here, you can see Jack Stanley, unaware that he was actually in the shot, taking an "advance" on his payment...

Working on a couple of composites for the film. These are far from done, but just started sketching out how I want to obscure the action a little because the character's POV is from outside a window.

Mark, should there be blinds in this reverse shot? This is his direct POV from outside? BTW, I like the shots.

Yeah, they are there, but too spread apart right now. We actually shot it with him in the left side of the frame, but when I looked at it in post, it looked a little stiff. So I have been playing with compositing his reflection into the window as well. So the final shot might be something more like this:

I am still playing with all of this and it might turn out different. But...

The shot with his reflection is way cool. Looks better than the other one (both good shots though) to me.
