View Full Version : WHERE THE HEART LIES ... Johnson, Hyten, Golden & Bullis

It's pretty cool you guys are a wrap. This will be the first one I will be checking out. I am sure it will not be crushed under the great weight of our collective expectations.
We hope to crush expectations by getting everyone to focus on who is doing this. I mean, come on! This is Johnson, Hyten, Golden and Bullis. By adding a legitimate talent such as Geoff Reisner we hoped to not stink up the place too bad. ... and then Matty brings that f*cking fish on set. Story over. Place stinks.

i do it the opposite way. i save the ones i think will be the best for last. otherwise the other films would look somewhat disappointing after already seeing the best.

That remains hazy in my mind. I am also told (though I am skeptical) that my snoring was audible on a couple takes. Hard for me to believe that (not that I snored, but that someone wouldn't throw a friggin' sandbag at me if such was the case).

Consider it cinema verite ... like the flaws in fine leather ... merely proof of its authenticity and character. My sonorous snoring should be prized - not villified.

Kyle,
It's your fault. The stunning and innovative CORSAIRS has caused us to beat ourselves senseless and to the point of exhaustion simply trying to get WTHL to approach the genius that you displayed. Dare I leave Tim editing alone to see Cloverfield? In a house with sharp instruments and potent poisons?

I gotta relate this little event from today. You see, as Blaine mentioned, we are flying to Seattle tomorrow to shoot the performance part of the Vienna Teng video on Whidbey Island under harsh conditions. We've been scrambling for two weeks trying to pull everything together for the shoot and one final item involved getting a suitably ancient looking book to be a main prop. I had located what looked like a good choice on ebay and was corresponding with the seller to buy it and have it shipped FedEx.
Well, this morning the deal fell through and so I started scouring the net for local sources here in Los Angeles. The prop houses I contacted didn't really have anything that looked good enough on closeups to be suitable. They have lots of old books, but mainly as background dressing. I would have had to physically search their shelves myself with no assurance I'd come up with anything close.
So, I located two references to sellers of old books. Blaine and I visited the first one, which turned out to be a hovel in Hollywood that smelled of cat urine and hot plate meals no doubt cooked by the strange little man operating the premises. When I described what I wanted he sort of went catatonic and it was pretty clear we were at a dead end. Blaine did find a stack of old Playboys on one shelf that amused us for a short while.
Our next choice was "Michael R. Thompson - Bookseller of Fine Antiquarian & Scholarly Books." Mr. Thompson's lair turned out to be replaced by a beauty shop and I thought the search had come to a sad end. I did have a phone number, though, and it turned out Mr. Thompson had merely relocated a block away.
When Blaine and I were escorted in by an aging, yet charming, librarian-ish woman we found ourselves in a virtual museum of rare books. Mr. Thompson and his partner were holding court in a small conference room. When I described my mission he told me that, unfortunately, they don't have any prop books -- everything they have is valuable.
Well, I could tell he was an interesting man and the damn place was just pretty cool so I decided to engage him in a conversation to figure out just what the rare book business was all about. Besides, he was sporting a Patriots sweatshirt that seemed so incongruous with the surroundings that the whole thing seemed surreal.
As I warmed to the conversation I went into full schmooze mode and explained how we were starving film makers ... how I moved to California from the Midwest ... how I loved books and words etc. etc. I thought he might know somebody who could help or that he might even have a distressed book somewhere in the attic.
As the conversation continued he eventually said, "Damn, I know just the book for what you describe." He pulls out the most incredible volume I've ever seen. It's all in Latin and Greek in parallel collumns. The outside of the thing looks like it came straight from Mordor or something. For the record, the title is "DIO CASSIO. Romanarum historiarum libri XXV." He says to me, "I can tell you're an honest man. Go ahead and use the book. Bring it back by next Wednesday."
The real scary thing is that the damn price tag on this thing is $2,500. I can see it now. Bullis goes to get a Starbucks and leaves it on the bench in the airport waiting lounge. ..... crap! Anyway, we're taking it to Washington where we'll use it as a "hero" prop and try to find something more destructible for long shots that we can substitute.
Here's a pic of the generous Mr. Thompson and his partner:

We had amazing skies for most of today's shooting. We looked at a few of the shots and Disjecta truly had his "A" game today. It was a rough shoot (as expected) with cold wind, rain and the ordeal of getting that piano out to the beach. However, everybody is stoked with the footage and Vienna was a real trooper -- a true joy to work with. We huddled in the truck during an interlude of rain showers but jumped back out when it began clearing so we could shoot until we literally ran out of light.
Afterwards we picked up groceries and Bullis cooked a spectacular dinner for everyone. We had a house full of people, including four young girls who talked us into playing Sardines (Bullis was the sardine). Afterwards, Vienna sat down at the piano and played two of her songs from the yet to be released album. It was one of those moments you remember as you think about special times in your life.
Now we're settled in and waiting for Norm to arrive. Tomorrow should be another very good day.

We were deathly afraid of losing Norm into the pond early in the shoot as he had in opaque contact VFX lenses and, let's face it, he ain't the most graceful chap on the West Coast. Hey Mark, just out of curiosity, were there any permitting requirements on that beach, or could you guys just wing it there?
As you might guess, given this was a Fat Monster production, there was lots of nervous looking over one's shoulders on this shoot. Our normal operating procedure is sort of a "dine-and-dash" philosophy (Um, officer, my permit's in the car. Just hold on and we'll all go get it...." In this case, though, having a piano on the beach made retreat problematical.
Fortunately, we had several factors working in our favor. First, the south end of Whidbey Island is fiercely independent and rebellious (artists and eco-activists in heavy supply). Hell, look at the incredible edifice we stayed in (three giant hexagons crazily put together like a poor man's Winchester Mystery House - Building Codes? We don't need no steenking building codes.) Second, the beach we were shooting on fronts a strip of private property owned by a guy we schmoozed and later learned had been Microsoft Employee #84. When we got his blessing to drag the piano across his property to the beach front we figured we were probably going to be ok without a permit.
Just this morning as I went to take Vienna to hair/makeup I was reminded that Tim and I agreed a month ago that the official Fat Monster slogan shall be: "We depend upon the kindness of strangers and the science of happy accidents."
Mark Harris

Gotcha, I was wondering how stringent the local governments were up there. Anymore if it's brooklyn, I just go out and do it. Even when I've had permits, no one has ever come up to me to ask about them. I am a little more guarded when I might get others in trouble, like a night club we shot in front of recently. But...
It's a gorgeous location. I used to live up there though and Whidbey is so beautiful.

I'm sure Mark, Tim, Steven, Scott, Vienna & Team are all out on the beach right now freezing, as I'm preparing things here for our own Super Bowl party. Originally I was going to shoot today with them, and when I realized what day it was, they were gracious enough to change he schedule around & let me travel up to shoot yesterday instead.
I have to say, this video is turning out more impressive than I ever could have imagined. Mark & Tim make a great team, and Steven is AMAZING at capturing the images he does. All great people to work with, and I will miss hanging out with them. I'd look forward to another opportunity to work with them all again soon.
Oh, and Scott, it was great being able to meet you too! This guy is an AMAZING cook, and kept everyone very happy! Helluva hard worker too!
Vienna is flat out possibly one of the coolest women I've ever had the pleasure to meet & get to know a little. Beautiful, talented enough to go VERY far in the music industry, and yet so down to earth that she'll do whatever it takes to get the job done & is an incredible team player (freezing beyond what the others thought she may be able to handle in that dress, etc.). Great sense of humor as well!
This music video is flat out going to rock, there's just no other way to state it. I'm so thankful to have been a part of it.
My ONLY disappointing experience with the whole trip up there, was that the download of the HD version of BERLIN didn't successfully pull all the way down, so the group only got to see the first 4 1/2 minutes of it. Oh well, soon ... very soon....

Thanks so much for those very kind words, Norm. We just got back from a full day of shooting on the beach and I read your posts to everyone. Today we got perfect weather (overcast but very little rain/mist). We were able to get all the detail shots we put off over the past two days out of a need to get primary coverage.
Right now we're waiting for Dean to get back from a gig in Seattle so that we can lug the piano back to the shop. As a side note, this video has become a reprieve for this old piano. Its fate was most likely demolition for parts or simply deterioration in the shed as being merely one of the 180+ old pianos Dean has accumulated over the years.
You see, last night Vienna gave an impromptu concert for the crew and a collection of local Whidbey neighbors. Dean's girlfriend brought her daughters (8 and 10 years old) and they were transfixed by Vienna's playing. When they got home they begged their mother to let them take piano lessons. After learning about this, Dean announced he would completely refinish and refurbish the piano and deliver it to their house as an inspiration for the girls to learn on. How cool is that? The Vienna Teng Whidbey music video piano will have a whole new life and, hopefully, many talented hands making music on it for years to come.

Ha ha.... You are SO right, Norm. I take it all back. (I'm still worrying about a workers comp claim for that knee crunch you took at Tim's direction!). You were seriously cool and mostly graceful. However, I DO have that clip with you approaching Vienna's piano at the climax of the song and you took a big stumble that made us all crack up. Pay me $50 and I'll see that it disappears!

That is SUCH a cool story about the piano being refurbished for the girls, as well as Vienna's concert. Okay, now I'm disappointed about ANOTHER thing; never getting to see/hear Vienna play in person. DRAT! Missed it the night we arrived, and sounds like we left too early last night as well.
Oh well ... concert tickets, I suppose. :cheesy:

will this music video be available online later?
Absolutely Zak. The label is waiting to see it before they decide the promotion strategy they'll use for it. Although nothing is set in stone, the indications now are that the video will be given a widespread on-line release as a means to get as much attention for Vienna as possible. The song itself is from her first album rather than being a new release. It has enormous popularity among her fan base and is among the most frequent requested by audiences at her concerts. She also played a version of it when she was on Letterman. Since this is her first video, the idea is to leverage the song's popularity while also providing a good vehicle to attract first-time listeners to her music.
Also, Vienna told me that she is on a separate label in Europe and they have expressed great interest in the video too. There may be different strategies by the two labels. My guess is that when it's released you'll see a low-res version on YouTube and the various music sites with a high-res version for sale on iTunes. If the response is good it will be likely that there will be production of a new video for one of the singles on her upcoming album (again, this is only my estimation based on the information I've been given).
When she played her impromptu concert here at Huckleberry Hill she played a couple completed new songs and some portions of works in progress. Although I'm obviously biased, I honestly believe the new album is going to be phenomenal based on those samples. I personally lobbied her to push the new song "Kansas," which was stunningly beautiful and, in my opinion, the equal of "Gravity." I'm a native of the state and for years I've kept a mental index of locations that are evocative of the beauty and desolation many people aren't aware can be found there. Vienna lit up at the suggestion because they drove through that very part of the state during her recent tour and she thought at the time that some of that landscape would be perfect for a video.
Obviously, you never know in this damn industry what will happen, but both Vienna and her management have expressed enthusiasm for the footage we've shown them from the shoot and seem sincere when they say they want to have us produce the next one. Given my strong feelings about growing up in Kansas it would be a real dream to be able to take a crew "home" to shoot a video for her eponymous song. Besides, I know where the best pool halls and bowling alleys are :)
Getting back to your question, we did negotiate the right to use this video on our own web site when we signed up to produce it. We'll obviously work with Vienna's team to figure out what resolution we should use but I think it's fair to say that one of the first things we do when we finish it is to post a thread here on DVXUSER.

Not yet. The friggin' clutch went out in Dean's piano hauling truck so the f*cker is still sitting there on the beach and we're going to try to help him get it in the morning. So, we're here one more night and will hopefully be able to finally get home tomorrow afternoon some time.
Tonight was a very typical south Whidbey Island evening. We went to a guy's house who makes stilts. He had TONS of stilts of all sizes - including huge ones that must have been 9 feet tall. Inside the house in the living room was a trapeze and a long fabric similar to what you see Cirque du Soleil perform on. Even better was the "Tetrahedral swing" in the back yard. Seriously, this was one of the weirdest things I've seen. I almost got sick on it.
And there were all sorts of weird-ass new age stuff like crystals and meditation etc. etc. ... Everybody we met seemed to be into something a bit strange (by my background). Bullis got on the trapeze and performed admirably. That sucker is unstoppable.

In all seriousness, I want to say that working with the Fat Monster crew has been a great experience.
Tim Hyten will go very far in the world of film and music videos. He is a brilliant director and brings out the best in me while we are on set. He has huge respect for his cast and crew and has a razor sharp mind when it comes to visualizing shots.
Mark Johnson is a genius. He is a true renaissance man. His talents are many but when there is a crowd, he is the piano man :) He has a huge heart and a great sense of humor. I just love being around him.
Scott Bullis is an intense philsopher and lover of mankind. His mission is to do good for others and I felt it on and off the set while working with him. He is a very cool guy and I wish him well.
The whole experience was one of magic and, now that it's over, at least for this project, I feel like I'm missing something very important. I will work again and as often as I can with this cool crew.
Thanks, guys, for some great memories and experiences.

Tim has cabbaged onto our last free drink ticket like a man with a winning lottery ticket. He was on his best behavior as we found our way to the "A" section of the Southwest infamous lineup and he only got raised eyebrows so it appears he may be allowed to board. While we were waiting he overcame his phobia of public restrooms to take a dump and he returned with a huge grin saying, "I smelled Lysol, baby. I scored big."
We apparently have made arrangements to be picked up, but it remains unclear who or when. Screw it, I just want to be home.
Given that I have unaccountably retrieved some semblance of sobriety, let me pause a moment to return the favor of words that my favorite curmudgeon wrote a few posts back. Steven is one of my favorite people in the world. He knows how special this shoot was to me personally and how much it meant to me to be able to complete what we started back in December. I hope many, many of you avail yourself of the opportunity to actually meet and work with some of the stellar talents who frequent this little backwater board in cyberspace.

I can't wait to see how the video turns out. I always feel like I'm sorely out of place on the boards here. I'm just a young 20-year-old kid swapping conversation with professionals out in the field, doing amazing things, and working so hard at a craft that seems so impossible, so glamorous to me. I guess what I'm trying to say is that your team is, and always will be, a huge inspiration to me.
I'm excited to finally watch Where the Heart Lies and to see Vienna's video be put together. With every BTS photo I look at I get more and more "home sick" of California. I hope to make it out there again very soon to shoot something of the caliber I've seen in this thread.

Just got a ring from Southwest. They have found our bags, which I'm sure you can imagine is good news. I feel like I've been in hyrdo hexon swing for 3 days. Either that or I've just come down from a day of drinking at the airport.
Working on such a stressful project like this really conditions you for a lot of things and I really am totally stoked to see the shots we have in the can.
I must say that we have gotten so much better at working together as a team and I can't wait to see what we're doing in a year.
Steven Dempsey is the man. I don't need to say much more because the footage will speak for itself. I could have shot the damn thing myself and it would have suffered immensely. The guy is a fuc king animal. I think shooting animals for so long has had some weird effect on him. Talk about a serious talent. Hiring him for the shoot might be the single best decision we made for this video.
Now....
We are launching directly into 3 more music videos for the month of Feb/March and have to finish up WTHL.
We are zombies with a lust for no sleep, impossible schedules and interesting predicaments.

When I went to bed last night Southwest didn't have our bags (which included our HVX and other gear) so you can imagine how much better I feel to see that some time in the night Tim took delivery of everything. That raises the whole "which bags do you carry on the plane" issue. On most trips we travel light enough to bring the gear on the plane but if we're having to take any lights or an adapter it often means using one of the big pelican cases with foam cut out for the HVX and other items. I dunno, though, after this scare I'm thinking maybe we just make it a policy to carry on the camera no matter what. At least we DID make sure we had all our footage backed up in two locations and I had a complete set on the laptop I was carrying.
Well, Vienna Teng has hijacked this thread for long enough. It's time to get back to the home stretch of the Love Fest and finish Where The Heart Lies. As Blaine mentioned, he will be doing some compression tests on the rough cut so we can make a decision about the best size/quality compromise to fit the contest limits. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.
We did take the current cut with us on the trip up to Whidbey Island and Tim screened it for Disjecta, who had some very valuable notes for us. If you're reading this, Blaine, we may want to get together after Tim has things up and running on his workstation this morning to talk about a few things. And, as you mentioned in an earlier post, we have to get our final SAG paperwork signed and filed.
The really nice thing is that we're dealing with subtle editing issues a week before deadline rather than finding ourselves looking at the clock ticking down the last few hours while still trying to finish the damn thing and even still shooting!(Remember, Blaine, how you and I were having to shoot a scene less than two hours from deadline?)
Where The Heart Lies has been a joy for all of us who have been working on it these past few months. I think we all have to stop and really consider how fortunate we are to have DVXUSER providing an aggressive short film festival scheme that often has made the difference between shooting or not shooting a film. Just having that "get off your ass and shoot" framework is worth gold no matter what films are made.
Even more importantly, as I sit here reflecting with my over-priced latte, I realize that many of the people who are my truly best friends are in my life solely because of DVXUSER. How could I ever put a price on the value of knowing Jack Stanley as a personal friend and as someone who I have worked with and will be working with in the near future? How about Ted Arabian? There's a whole treatise of technical theater experience in his head along with a heart of gold. Then there's Kyle Stebbins and his posse. Because of DVXUSER I have an extended family in Nebraska and an annual New Years gig sitting in with a rock band on my calendar. Blaine has become one of my closest personal friends and through him I've met Kevin Halverson. Because of this forum Matty G. is now a fat monster -- and one of the coolest guys I have ever been able to call a best bud. And there's Luis who we are hoping to put together a production partnership with. The guy is astonishing and in the picture because of DVXUSER. In the past few posts I've indicated how I feel about Steven Dempsey, of course. If I'm standing on a cliff I know that rogue with the brogue will be there with a rope no matter what and no matter how much verbal abuse will rain down as he rescues me. I haven't even scratched the surface of members here who have helped make my life what it is today. I thank all of you.
And, of course, lastly I have to give thanks for meeting Tim. When I first met him just over a year ago he did impress me with his incredible work ethic on set. He really was - and remains - the model for me of how a crew member should behave during production. Soon I recognized the quirky aspects of his personality that somehow meshed with mine so that we became best friends in spite of our age difference. Best of all, as we made the leap to form a production company, I suddenly realized that he has a depth of talent in areas that are not so quickly seen.
Tim has that so-elusive ability to come up with images and visual concepts that are both expressive and evocative. If we succeed as a creative force it will largely be due to Tim's ability to spin gold from air. And as much as that is important to me, I can honestly say it is meaningless compared to what its worth to me to know every day that I have a partner who cares about me and who will have my back no matter what sh*t we step in. I don't want this post to devolve into a sloppy "Bud" commercial, but I do want to say that I know very well how fortunate I am to have Tim as my partner and DVXUSER is responsible for that blessing in my life. Thanks guys. Thank you all.
Ted Arabian

We are not sure its a good way, but it is what it is. At least we look completely sane and functional compared to Ms. Spears.
The "look behind" in that clip actually is a riff on a shot in the Vienna Teng video so that after the video gets released this cilp should be pretty funny.

Mark, how is that English degree treating you?
I'll take it. It's much more reputable than the political science one on my parchment.
I think the English degree thing got mixed up because when we first got there our host (the clown) was explaining some of the deficiencies in the compound's construction. His explanation was, "hell, I was an English major"...
And, of course, as Kyle, Alex, Brandon and about everyone else knows who have been on our shoots, I require periodic vocabulary tests. I think it's about time you took yours, Matty.

The only really messed up part of that was the f*cking DP was nowhere to be found when we had to move that bastard off the beach. Where was he anyway? Oh, I remember. he was already back at his luxury digs sipping a Mimosa.
... come to think of it. He isn't even shown in any of the pictures of the piano being moved TO the beach either.

On another note, Fat Monster went to its first big-dog Hollywood party last night. I'm proud to say Tim wore his "ambiguous" t-shirt and jeans rather than cave into the dictates of fashion. It was pretty cool as there were a whole bunch of celeb-types there (Snoop Dog, the other Hilton sister, most of the cast from American Pie, Hal Holbrook, J.Lo etc. etc.) We got our business done (schmoozing with the manager for the band Miggs who we are doing a video for) and then got hammered on free top shelf alkehol. Amazingly, we neither got kicked out nor behaved in a way that betrayed our newbness.
Best part of the night was when they didn't have our names on the list. I had to do some serious b.s.-ing to get in.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone and thanks, Jack, for the post. My attitude for stuff like this is basically, 1) if nobody is hurt, and, 2) nobody is going to jail, then its pretty much small stuff in the big picture.
We have been much much better about backups. When we flew back from the Vienna Teng shoot we had 3 copies in three places, which seemed particularly good when the luggage failed to show up. There is a little work on the laptop not backed up but which we can re-do pretty easily (as well as an outstanding porn collection) but otherwise its not a disaster except for the $4,500 hit to replace it (sh*t, that's more than nine iPhones).

I was in the bathroom and didn't pay attention to the other guy at the sink. I made a police report and perhaps they'll have a surveillance video that will I.D. him. Man, just tell the cops that you were having a fake conversation about having top secret stuff on you laptop. So whoever took it must be a terrorist. Maybe then they will actually look for the guy.

Luckily we had the edit backed up. However, we were having severe trouble being able to render anything out (FCP kept crashing). Finally, Oliver Noble brought his MacBookPro laptop over and Tim was able to get it working. So it was a bit of a scare, but everything seems to be going fine. We should be able to upload today without any difficulty and even have some time to work on optimum compression.
