Just finished the prep and build of the camera. It sits on my desk, patiently awaiting orders...

hehe, rock on! I have a feeling this is going to be one of the nicest looking flicks of the fest... no offense to anyone.

Guys, we've been through a truly hectic situation today. Last night our leading actress, Julie Horner, called and informed us she was stranded in Atlanta after Delta cancelled her flight. We were disappointed that she wasn't able to make rehearsals (I ended up stuffing my shirt and reading her part) but we weren't overly concerned as her first scene wouldn't be shot until Saturday.

This morning we learned that Delta had huge problems in Atlanta and Julie was unable to board any flights (terrible overbooking) and had to return home to Wilmington. Thus, we found ourselves without a leading lady. Given the importance of the role and the work we've put into this project, we were in a quandary.

Fortunately, a combination of factors came together and we are extremely pleased to announce that we have just signed ANA ALEXANDER to play the role of Lisa Lowe. ANA is a very accomplished actress with credits that include guest starring roles in SLEEPER CELL, CSI: MIAMI, RENO 911, LAS VEGAS, CANE, YOUNG & THE RESTLESS and THE WEDDING BELLS. She has co-starred on TWO AND A HALF MEN, OUT OF PRACTICE and CSI: NY. Her film credits include AFRICA, SECOND SKIN, GLASS TRAP and DEEP IN THE VALLEY to name a few. Please check out her site at www.anaalexander.com (http://www.anaalexander.com).

good to hear you were able to fill the spot with such an accomplished actress. -- and what impressive credentials. i'm always envious of you big dogs on the west coast.

ana is going to be a great addition to your cast and i'm sure you are all relieved that the void was filled. i am sorry, however, to hear that your other lead actress was stuck due to a shitty airline.

you win some you lose some.

will they be featuring Where The Heart Lies on her site??

Mark Johnson
01-17-2008, 09:09 PM
Thanks Kyle. We are just thankful we live in L.A. with such a pool of talent. We suspect the writer's strike may very well be making accomplished television actors more willing to work on little indy projects like this. Her agent said she liked our script and also liked some of the samples of recent stuff we shot that we sent to them for review.

will they be featuring Where The Heart Lies on her site??
Hell, we expect this will be her big break. When they see Geoff's footage they'll throw away the rest of her reel!!

AH, the incomparable BULLIS has arrived! He and Tim are out with a shopping list for various and sundry items while I put a dent in the Beck's he brought with him.

I also finally got my iPhone replaced (after waiting out Steve Job's announcement to see if a new version would be released this week). When Bullis and Tim return I'll break its cherry by taking a couple pics of Bullis and Tim.

Don't mind you asking at all and we'll definitely share the budget after the films are viewed. The truth is that we've been exceptionally frugal in addition to "depending upon the kindness of strangers" -- to quote Blanche Dubois.

We hope our film looks like a million bucks but we don't want anyone to have expectations based on our budget one way or the other. Frankly, there are a whole lot of stories from preproduction that I believe will be of interest and possibly of use to others in the indy trenches. I have been collecting footage and images that we'll post after we're done.

So, we appreciate the interest and we think you may be surprised when we do break down our budget (which, by the way is sort of in flux anyway due to these last minute issues).

Not being able to get Bosindy in harness may be the biggest hit of all. We will probably have to hire three grips just to cover the load he was going to carry.

Hola, mates ... We are, indeed, off and running. Yesterday afternoon (Friday) we commenced shooting our first scene here in Rancho Cucamonga. Geoff Reisner and Matty G. are consummate pros and it was a true pleasure having them operate as a team.

http://www.archivisuals.com/geoff02.jpg

http://www.archivisuals.com/geoff01.jpg

We finished up close to scheduled time and headed up the 15 to the high desert for our second location. Anyone living out here on the East side of the so-called "Inland Empire" knows that going north on the 15 on a Friday afternoon is a crap shoot. Crap. We got slammed with a wreck in the middle lane that backed up traffic and put us behind immediately. We had made arrangements with a restaurant at the location to cater the meal and they were gracious and understanding with our late arrival.

After dinner we moved to the shooting set and F*CK it was cold! Many, many, many props to the crew for being such troopers - - especially Tim, Geoff and Matty, who pretty much had to be operating at all times during the exteriors.

Blaine is a line producer's line producer and he has my unending sympathy for having to try and keep the schedule in some semblance of order when we started out behind the power curve immediately. It was almost a mini-reality show watching the dynamics going on between Blaine's efforts to time manage and Tim's efforts to get the shots. Fortunately, no blows were thrown and no loaded weapons were within reach. Kudos and muchos gracias to our cast for being willing to shoot until 2 a.m.

Mark Johnson

Indeed that is Luis. .... Man, is he great to have on your set. He helped us out with the Nude Video shoot a few months ago and we hope we can have him shoot with us MANY times down the road. Also, Kholi showed up and had his full rig HVX with adapter and he got GREAT BTS footage. Unfortunately, he had to hit the road before we wrapped for the day so we'll have to PhotoShop him into the crew pic. We had other cast/crew not in this shot as well. Hopefully, everyone will make the big wrap party next month and we can get a full pic.

Right now we're at the amazingly cool offices of Juris Productions shooting office interior scenes. Everything is going swimmingly well so far and we'll update with more pics tonight.

Ciao.

LOL, Chris. ... Remember, this isn't the "Dream Team" (Macgregor, Jack Daniel Stanley, John Hudson, Barry Green, and David Jimerson). This is Johnson, Hyten, Golden & Bullis. Given our history, ain't nobody gonna be intimidated until you see something worthy on the screen for once. Hell, we might all end up hung over from a SuperBowl party and never finish the edit! You never know with us. We have, though, been having one hell of a great time. The shoot here in Pasadena is going very well, the weather is sunny and Bullis is in particularly good form. Those are without any image correction, of course. Tim and I have been working through two instructional DVDs on Apple's COLOR so that we can give this film the best color grading possible. It goes without saying that Geoff's work blew us away. He put so much effort into our interiors and it really paid off. We got supberb performances from our actors. Ana Alexander is simply amazing and she really elevated the piece to a level that we didn't dream we would achieve.

Nice job guys. Lookin' good. This could be "the one" for you.

Many thanks, Jack. We do know that this one will be a huge improvement over what we've done in the past and that's what really matters. Any time we can look back and see where we've addressed past failings is a big deal. This time we set out to really work on preparation and preproduction and it made a huge difference (duh!) The last festival saw us basically trying to make an effects-driven film in less than a week and it was a good lesson (more like spanking).

We also made a deliberate attempt to analyze the success of others and we deconstructed several of your shorts, Jack. Whether or not we even come close remains to be seen.

I suppose I have some trepidation since I believe we nailed the image and acting elements and are, thus, left with our script and our editing to sink or swim. However, we take some heart in the fact that Ana Alexander said that the quality of the script was a big factor in her decision to come on board. We got some very good notes from some of the members here and developed a much stronger story arc than what our original script presented.

Now we only have a final scene to shoot next Sunday and we'll be officially wrapped.

Ted,

We catered a nice dinner in the kitchen/dining area for the cast and crew. Dennis and Suzanne joined us and both said that they wished you and Diane were here again. I did pass on to them that you sent greetings and they said you need only call ahead the next time you are in L.A. and they'll have your bedroom ready!

Kyle Stebbins
01-21-2008, 01:12 PM
The most phenomenal thing about those grabs is that the views are 100% real. There was no green-screening and that, alone, bumps the production value of your short ten-fold.

Unbelievable images, guys. Geoff has a very very good eye and I'm envious that you get to work with such a talented guy. Don't even get me started with your cast, either... what a great looking bunch of people.

Dennis and Suzanne are gracious hosts and incredibly generous friends, Mark. I'd give anything in this world to sustain such a close relationship with people like them. Send along my best to them and let them know that when things get messy, loud, and obnoxious during the shoots... that "I told them so". What do you expect from a bunch of crazy filmmakers?

Oh, and do me favor and pitch out all those malt-ball beverages from the fridge. Gross.

But in all seriousness, guys. Great work. You'll be putting me to shame.

To be honest, the first time I saw a picture of the IndiSlider I was skeptical. However, Steve Dempsey had just gotten his when we were up in Washington shooting the Vienna Teng video and I was knocked out by how much it added. Steven recently sent us a link to some shots he grabbed around his home last week that really show off the capabilities of the IndySliderPro: http://www.pinelakefilms.com/snowmotion.html

Matty G. agreed to go in on one with us so we got it just in time for this shoot and Geoff really put it to work.

Thanks Ted. It's hard to believe it was just a year ago that we were all bunking in Palos Verdes and shooting each day at Cable. In truth, I think a big reason that Dennis and Suzanne were willing to put up with a shoot at the house was due to the positive vibes and good energy of the crew during TTN. We are going to go over and have Bullis cook a meal this week and we'll share your wishes with them.

Ok, now I gotta go run buy a new terrabyte drive at Costco for this footage! I got one for less than $299 the last time I was there (thanks to a tip from Blaine).

You can do some nice shots with it and it's perfect for ultra slow, short movements. Leveling it can take a little time but it's definitely faster than trying to level an 8-foot section of track...

The only thing that bugged me a little was being limited to using the attached bogen head which didn't allow for really smooth pan/tilt in my opinion. A CAM was setup with a cartoni plate/head whereas B CAM was setup with a bogen plate/head (another set of sticks and the indi slider). It worked for this production since we had access to 2 cams but on a single cam shoot, it'd be best to have the same heads operating on both the slider and sticks. I think there is an bogen adapter plate you can hook up to the slider which allows you to use any ball fluid head.

We'll be going back up in a friggin' week to shoot Vienna's performance portion of the video on Whidbey Island. Although the weather might be dicey, we're going to be shooting at a pretty amazing place. We found a piano technician who is an environmental activist and he built a huge compound out of only recycled materials he scrounged from landfills. It's got two hot tubs in the woods, zip lines, trampolines and 187 pianos that he's collected over time. He's told us he'll give us a few of his pianos with ruined soundboards that we can "do with as we please - including shoving off a cliff or dragging into the surf." The guy is a professional clown to boot, so it should be interesting.

Vienna has been really great and says she's up to bunking in a sleeping bag if need be. Norm Sanders is our actor (see post for frame grabs: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1126069&postcount=282)

I'll get some BTS for sure.

Awesome! Yeah, I understand about the head issue though... might have to play around a little with it, I take it the "slider" is something we could use on a smaller set where you couldn't really fit a dolly.

It's with much regret that we missed our chance of working with Tom Marshall's immeasurable acting chops. We were unfortunately forced to adjust our shooting schedule due to unforeseen circumcisions...er, circumstances. Tom was, at the time, incommunicado and we had to press a crew member, Oliver Noble, into service on extremely shot notice.

Mark Johnson

Yeah, it was a real downer because Tommy is OUR man. I believe he had a late shoot the previous day and had been required to turn his phone off - thus, we couldn't reach him when we needed to shoot the scene. Tommy, we shall buy you a cigar and a good glass of Guiness to recompense partially. ....

And, since you're a newcomer you obviously don't know our somewhat spotty track record, when it comes to the finish line. Very cool bts video.... made me SOOOOOO homesick for CA and filmmaking!

If anything, you guys are going to win for best location! Dennis and Suzanne's house is so incredible. (I see that the fish tank has not been installed yet!)

Really fun watching you boys doing your thing. You keep sending me clips like that and I will be out there before you know it! (I guess I need to find a new position though!)

Looking great guys! Can't wait to see the footage from the HVX!!!

Mark, I am very excited to see this flick you are working on. And I just love the title... it really seems to be a bit of a double entendre.

As I was watching the bts and then viewing the grabs, I started to put the story (my own version, obviously!) together in my head. Really looking forward to this.

Ted, it is just so damn nice to have you back on the forum. It will be even better to get you out here again. Surely we can make that happen this spring or summer, huh?

Thanks for your enthusiasm. We do really like this story and we can only hope it cuts the way we see it in our heads so far.

Can't wait to see some grabs and BTS on your thread. I still think your original thread in HorrorFest was one of the best sources of info and amusement we've had (for some reason stuff I get involved with sort of devolves into a low-rent frat party it seems. Must be Bullis' fault).

Ted Arabian
01-23-2008, 08:51 AM
hee hee.... I don't think that you should share that credit with Bullis. Stand up and be recognized, my friend. YOU ARE A WALKING FRAT PARTY!!!!

Thanks for the kind words. That first fest was truly a great experience for me. I will never forget that.

As for bts and grabs for "Love," that is kinda hard as I am planning on a very short shoot schedule due to my late entry. But when I get something, you'll be the first to know it!

Be well!

And YES! Let's talk about a visit. I would love to see you again.

Just got back from the Fat Monster offices and I've got to say that Tim is doing a great job on editing. Perhaps his greatest strength in this area is his willingness to look at other options. He may be young but he is well beyond his years when it comes to understanding a good edit, regardless of where the ideas come from. For all of us on this project, the most important thing is to GET IT RIGHT.

Speaking of RIGHT, right now, Johnson is trying to see Cloverfield, a movie he has been trying to see for over a week.

Speaking of RIGHT, right now, Johnson is trying to see Cloverfield, a movie he has been trying to see for over a week.

Once again I got f*cked. My GPS went out en route and I ended up first in the parking lot of a lumber yard and then outside a Pollo Loco imposter. I may have actually made it to the movie but I was seduced by a 7-11 with its promises of SlimJims and Cheddar Sun Chips. As I exchanged b.s. with the charming clerk with the almond eyes I decided to say "screw it" and return to Fat Monster to bother Tim some more.

Tomorrow, maybe.

Perhaps a double feature of There Will Be Blood AND Cloverfield.

Man, you wouldn't want the work we dole out. Yesterday we found out one of our clients in Alabama f*cked up and never got the background plates we needed for a project due Feb. 1. So, we called up Sam Falconi and put him on a plane at 6 a.m. to Huntsville this morning. We picked him up at 11:00 p.m. and put a beer in his hand as we screened the footage he shot. The poor sucker has been up for almost 24 hours (late night party in Hollywood last night) but we won't take him home until we run out of beer. You should hear him whine. We're trying to decide whether we pay him or not. Probably not.

When Tim first came to me I was heartened by his attitude and spunk. He turned a blind eye to his impending demise. Afflicted with Entitilitus since birth, Tim preferred to look forward rather than looking backward. More than one DVXUSER has held back tears while watching this gallant lad struggle with his horribly misshapened genitalia. Say a prayer for Tim tonight. Say two if you really mean it.

No one knows what Entitilitis does, but Entitilitis kills. If you want to help, sponser an Entitilitis volunteer for national "talk backwards to raise awareness about entitilitis" day.
