SYNOPSIS
"I F*CKING HATE YOU" is the raw, whimsical glimpse of a young man's ill-conceived scheme to redeem himself in the eyes of his ex-girlfriend.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
This story was developed by Marion Kerr, John T. Woods and myself, Zak Forsman, by combining elements of two "half-ideas" into a unified whole. character was explored and discussed until the story emerged. no actual screenplay was written, no storyboards drawn up -- the experiment was to see what would happen if we instilled "radical collaboration" to the extent that the actors, director, sound and camera were mindfully attentive to the present moment; improvising to serve the story, allowing the scenes to evolve organically and following them to their natural conclusion.

WHAT IS 'A FILM BY SABI'?
Sabi by itself means "the bloom of time". It connotes natural progression -- tarnish, hoariness, rust -- the extinguished gloss of that which once sparkled. It's the understanding that beauty is fleeting. The word's meaning has changed over time, from its ancient definition, "to be desolate," to the more neutral "to grow old." By the thirteenth century, sabi's meaning had evolved into taking pleasure in things that were old and faded. A proverb emerged: "Time is kind to things, but unkind to man."

Sabi things carry the burden of their years with dignity and grace: the chilly mottled surface of an oxidized silver bowl, the yielding gray of weathered wood, the elegant withering of a bereft autumn bough. An old car left in a field to rust, as it transforms from an eyesore into a part of the landscape, could be considered America's contribution to the evolution of sabi. An abandoned barn, as it collapses in on itself, holds this mystique.

There's an aching poetry in things that carry this patina, and it transcends the Japanese. We Americans are ineffably drawn to old European towns with their crooked cobblestone streets and chipping plaster, to places battle scarred with history much deeper than our own. We seek sabi in antiques and even try to manufacture it in distressed furnishings. True sabi cannot be acquired, however. It is a gift of time.

Consider for a moment that perhaps Sabi can also be a cinematic aesthetic. Not a fixed set of principles or a rigid system of rules, but rather a creative flow -- part of the constant search and need for the natural expressive form of sound and images (to present themselves during the process of making the film). Sabi changes with time. It is an ever-evolving, whole-view approach to catalyzing, nurturing and capturing moments that are truthful in their own beauty, simplicity, structure and emotion, regardless of the complexities of production on an independent film. Sabi is an approach that seeks to create, capture and uncover transcendent moments in life that happen spontaneously and unplanned -- fleeting glimpses into something greater -- resulting in those hard-to-describe, perception-altering experiences as universal as art, music, emotion, poetry, cinema and life itself. If one was to consider this as an approach to making and experiencing cinema, then you would perhaps be encountering "a film by SABI".

STORYFORMING
Long before Heart of Now was shot, I had intended to craft a screenplay sans dialogue. That changed after a few key discussions. So here, we had the opportunity to take some of my ever-evolving principles and experiment with them. Myself, Marion and John met on two occasions. They came with an idea, a very specific scene. I came with an idea that helped put their scene (which became our ending) within a context. The pairing of the two half-ideas formed a structured whole. During our second story meeting John and Marion worked through possible motivation and objectives for their characters. I sat back and listened, taking note of what aspects of this story and their characters were the most compelling and appealing to them.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
This short was shot with two Canon HV20s with non-flipped 35mm adapters. To unify the form of this piece with its improvised content, I needed the camerawork to read as being just as spontaneous as the actors' performances -- as though the camera operators were in a struggle to keep up with the unfolding story. A key technique to infuse a "searching for the shot" quality was to monitor each camera without adjusting for the flipped image. This gave us a unique visual aesthetic that i'm sure will drive most people nuts, but it resulted in the momentary misframings and "panicked" corrections we were looking for. During pre-pro, I had considered shooting for B&W, but on set, inspiration took over and we made use of existing and supplemented color palettes to contrast the appearance of each character's world -- Carol's being more balanced but lacking in intensity, and Ron's being completely out of balanced and over the top.

CHARACTER NAMES
i'm not going to say much more than, this isn't an accident...

RON: means "song, joy" in Hebrew
CAROL: means "song" or "hymn"

SPECIAL THANKS
I want to thank Bruce Allen and Zach Seivers for donating equipment for a day.

BUDGET
this film was made with available resources, plus $40 for some indian food.

THINGS I LEARNED
1. that I really like the "reach" you get from a Sennheiser 416
2. my girlfriend and co-producer and editor (on Heart of Now), Jamie Cobb, discovered she has a knack for location sound work on IFHY. she received half a day of training from a friend of mine who is a sound designer that loaned us his Sennheiser 416, a boompole and his Sound Devices 702T. i was amazed. she worked the axis just right and often the sound is better here than in some scenes in Heart of Now where we hired a pro. she's pretty much the girlfriend every filmmaker should have.

BIOGRAPHY

I was born and raised in Sacramento, CA

My father was born in Paris, France and my mother was born in Washington DC

I have one sister, Vivian, who is also an actor. She's my best friend.

I love traveling and have been to France, Switzerland, Italy, China, Hong Kong, The Bahamas and parts of Eastern Europe. I also lived in London for a summer.

I love soccer and have played all my life.

I graduated from UC Irvine with a B.A. in theatre, a minor political science and a mix of dread and determination to meet the "real world".

My car died the day I moved to Los Angeles. I was towed into my new life here.

My grandparents were journalists and if I wasn't an actor, that's probably what I'd be doing.

I am a huge fan of Katherine Hepburn and own about two dozen biographies on her. My favorite film is "The Philadelphia Story".

Until about two years ago, I was quite convinced that most modern music, post British Invasion, sucked! I have since been proven otherwise. However, Billie Holiday is still my favorite.

If my life could be any movie genre, I'd pick "Adventure Serial". Like those 1940's Dick Tracy serials or Indiana Jones. Sound like fun.

BIOGRAPHY

I grew up in Aloha, Oregon.

After high school, I went to Portland State University.

I majored in computer science, archeology and finally, theatre.

After two years at PSU, I did some traveling.

Went all over the place, eventually ending up in Las Vegas, wghere I decided to finish up school at UNLV.

At UNLV, I worked wioth some very talented filmmakers, named JT Gurzi, Chris McInroy and Roger Erik Tinch, who I would end up working with many times in the future.

After I got my degree, I moved to Los Angeles.

I slept in my car a lot.

Then, after some hard work and patience, things started working out.

I got my first role, and consequently, my SAG card in "The Cutter", a Chuck Norris movie that was shot up in Spokane Washington. I played a cop. I got to shoot a Russian and arrest Chuck Norris. Not a bad gig.

I have since been working in tv/film for the last five years in Los Angeles.

I run my own DVD duplication/conversion company at www.archetypedvd.com (http://www.archetypedvd.com).

I'm managed by Neil Hassman and William J. Edwards at Hassman Entertainment.

funny, he just emailed me and he's on board for this. Matt was essential to making Heart of Now what it is. that guy has very good instincts (or is it intuition) for on-the-fly composition. he should be shooting docs.

I just love how Cassavetes uses a combination of improvised acting and improvised jazz underscore (although neither are of course fully improvised). It just shows how a little bit of chaos can work really well.

just made plans to meet next weekend with Marion and John to volley a few ideas around. There is a possibility that John could be whisked away to Morrocco due to a role he's up for. We'll play it by ear if that happens. I'd be inclined to put the project on hold until he returns.

thanks, Luis. I'm considering a title, different from the working title you commented on before. it suits this picture pretty well and the phrasing bears significance beyond just being provocative, but it contains the f-word. so i'm waiting for some feedback in the LoveFest Rules thread on its usage first.

i'm leaning that way. and had planned for it. but we were inspired (in the moment) to make some interesting lighting choices with the color pallette, so i'm torn in half at this point. of course addison will have his say. in the end, whatever emerges in the final edit will determine the appropriate look. maybe i'll do a color version and a b/w too?

I'm psyched to see some images.

How did the "improv" work out?

here's what happens when you improv the way we do... you block the scene with the actors, then place the two cameras. and over the course of roughly 15 takes, you are making adjustments to camera to capture/reveal the little nuances of the scene as they develop. meanwhile, the actors are honing the scene down, getting it very tight, still discovering new little nuggets along the way. and what you come away with is enough material that you could cut the scene in a myriad of different ways because there is something spontaneous and fresh or unique about each take. very exciting and very difficult to edit because you ultimately find yourself having to cut great, great stuff that will not likely see the light of day. not a bad situation to be in, but making the choices is hard.

i'll have some images up later this week. prepping for the Heart of Now wrap party tonight!

thanks leenewton, the truth behind that poster is it was an existing snapshot of John Woods that I had seen on his myspace page. he emailed the original file to me and i did the mock-up. if i ever do a print version i will have to call him over for a photo shoot because the resolution of the original pic is not nearly high enough. unfortunately.

Oh I can attest to this, I've done about 6 improv shorts and the extra footage just ends up being inside jokes with everyone involved in the production.

Good idea for the love fest. I've been considering doing the samething (improv) but I haven't had the inspiration hit me yet.

Decisions, decisions.

How did the production go Zak? Any stories to relate (lights blowing up, MattyG getting hammered on set, lead actor lighting his trailer on fire?)

Also, how was it working w/ the smaller cams? Are you satisfied w/ your choice?

Tim.

I asked Matty G to clean the Brevis and he got completely obliterated huffing compressed air out of the can. other than that, the day went pretty smooth. the only hiccup we had was in the morning, trying to get my second Brevis running (flip switch, no buzzy?) and deciding which adapter would go on which cam, etc.

pretty uneventful (the fireworks were happening "on camera"!!! :cheesy:). really, most exciting moment was when the delivery guy showed up with our Indian food... we were shooting on my doorstep and he just walked right up into the scene, didn't give a f*ck at all, and started pulling out the receipt for me to sign. at which point i said "cut".

i love working with the HV20. I don't know what Matt feels about it (i made him shoot with a flipped image to impose a "searching for the shot" quality on the footage). but i love it. i needed the cameras to appear as though they were struggling to keep up with the action -- beautifully amateurish in a way. this was meant to mirror the spontaneity of the performances with the actual visual form of the piece. having a camera that small let's me do all the things I want to be able to do. the only drawback is the HDV codec, really. one day, someone is going to put out a 2K HD camera the size of my fist and I will be a happy, happy little filmmaker.

you probably think i'm joking about matt and the compressed air. he has a serious problem.

still at an 8 1/2 minute cut. i've put this baby to bed for the holidays. the only news i've got really is that this will probably be the "pilot episode" of an original web series.

Zak Forsman
01-07-2008, 10:26 AM
okay, back to work this week. haven't looked at the cut since the holidays. it's a real luxury being able to put a project away for a while. it helps me forget everything I intended it to be, so that I can come to it with fresh eyes and (hopefully) a new respect for what it actually is. ONWARD!!!

sorry to go off topic here Zak, but i've been following 'heart of now' for a while and it's great to see the new clip up on the previews page. i couldn't help but notice the homage to 'Zui hao de shi guang' (aka 'Three Times') by Hsiao-hsien Hou - very nice, maybe verging on a little too plagiaristic :D but very nice . just wondering if you could put a high quality quicktime up on your site.. the compression is making all the reds go blocky

if you have no idea what i'm talking about - check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFGuYzGP7e4

when you think 'heart of now' will be done by?

also i can't wait to see this love fest entry :D

okay, there's no way to cut these scenes down any further and I'm at 7m12s. I think I just need to cut the first scene entirely and let the audience fill in some gaps on their own.

Which means there will definitely be a director's cut released as soon as the fest is over.

****ing thanks, guys. i've been ****ing cutting a ****ing home video trailer for You Don't Mess With The ****ing Zohan all weekend (aka Hell on Earth!!) so I haven't been able to get back to IFHY. but it's pretty much a ****ing given that the first ****ing scene/first ****ing act is getting the ****ing axe.

JDS, yeah, i'm still in a Heart of Now headspace. and probably will be for the next year as we cut it. in Heart of Now, the color orange holds a purpose... it shows up as a visual cue for anything associated with the main character's desire for a sense of family. here, it uh... well, in the full 8-9 minute version we would have seen two characters' worlds, one cool and ordered, the other hot (aka orangish) and chaotic. nothing deeper than that, though.

thanks guys, now your anticipation is making me nervous.

yeah, you know... you work with people, you like working with them, so you work with them again. some might call that building an ensemble, but that would indicate a claim of ownership in some way and that's not the case. "preferred collaborators" is a better way to put it.

Now, this isn't for my LoveFest entry. It's for two guys who
were the key to creating and capturing the look and feel I wanted
for Heart of Now. To return the favor (in the smallest way),
I opened up my studio to them for casting and post editorial
on a LoveFest entry of their own.

So the other day, while Zach Sheehan and Matt Garrett were
at the Sabi Studio putting the finishing touches on their first cut,
I took the opportunity to ask them a few questions about their short.

Render. then sound design, a touch of ADR, and a stereo mix in soundtrack pro. after that, i'll use the master output with split audio to do a 6 minute LoveFest cutdown... which I will hate.

Nikons 85mm 1.8, and 105mm 2.5Cool! I'm using the HV20 as well (just one though). I could tell that some sort of lens was used, looks real nice!

Nice colour grading as well.
Did you shoot in Cine mode?

Thanks again Zak. and I just read your Cinematography section- very interesting. I think the HV20 serves well for what you're trying to do. I hate adapters now- though I love the look- but instead of hating the flip you went with it and made something cool. Can't wait to see....

Sabi points to things that carry the burden of their years with dignity and grace: the chilly mottled surface of an oxidized silver bowl, the yielding gray of weathered wood, the elegant withering of a bereft autumn bough.

Many Americans are ineffably drawn to old European towns with their crooked cobblestone streets and chipping plaster, to places battle scarred with history much deeper than our own. We seek Sabi in antiques and even try to manufacture it in distressed furnishings. True Sabi cannot be acquired, however. It is a gift of time.

In his book, "Sculpting in Time", filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky observed: "It is considered that time per se, helps to make known the essence of things. The Japanese therefore see a particular charm in the evidence of old age. They are attracted to the darkened tone of an old tree, the ruggedness of a stone, or even the scruffy look of a picture whose edges have been handled by a great many people. To all these signs of age, they give the name Sabi, which literally means ‘rust’. Sabi, then, is a natural rustiness, the charm of olden days, the stamp of time. Sabi, as an element of beauty, embodies the link between art and nature."

So, consider for a moment that perhaps Sabi can also be a cinematic aesthetic.

Okay, here's something that illustrates my complete lack of professionalism. Normally, when one of your cinematographers get in the shot, you don't use it. or you roto him out.

But in this case, it's Matt Garrett (Matty_g) in a well deserved cameo appearance. I'll roto him out eventually, but for LoveFest... THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE!!!

MARION KERR as Carol

JOHN T. WOODS as Ron

Edwards at Hassman Entertainment.

heh, i've asked her about the "resemblance". she says she hears three different actors all the time -- nicole kidman, amy adams and naomi watts. depending on the camera angle, i've seen glimpses of all three.

Hi DVX I'm new here - nice to meet everyone.

I have been following the LoveFest(ival) threads since Zak has been steadily working on his short film for the DVX Lovefest and putting everything else in our entire company on hold.

We don't know what to do without him, so please let me know when it's over. :dankk2:

Also, that's why I decided to make (and finish) a super short Behind the Scenes on I F*CKING HATE YOU documentary, piece, whatever it is. It's sort of a spontaneous series of thoughts about the project, that were coming forth during the color correction of the project. Zak had no idea what I was going to do. I walked in on him and started shooting and asking questions in a belligerent manner.

Zak Wrote:

finalized color today. kevin burst into my bay with his video camera and assaulted me with questions about I F*CKING HATE YOU. he says he's going to cut it together and post it here soon. we'll see. i hate being interviewed.

It took me about five hours to shoot & cut it from the initial assault when I "burst" into Zak's bay. I could have worked on it longer, but I promised to make dinner for my girl and I figured I'd keep working the next day (which was yesterday).

BUT then... Matt Garrett needed my bay again (for what Zach Sheehan said was going to be "one-full-day" power session edit.)

I knew you can't cut a piece in one-day. (I mean, besides this BTS documentary I was making on I F*CKING HATE YOU.).

65RMP WMD - I know it's for a good cause, I'm kidding. Matt and Zach, of course I'd like to be cutting again this weekend, but I screwed up and told you it's free all-day today so now I'm in my dining room with cancelled daytime plans, typing this, bayless, penniless, tired and confused. But I stop and think what it would be like to have something cool in the can like Garrett and Sheehan do - and not having a way to get it out there. It gives me the shivers.

So DVX,

Re: my bay, i'll be patient to get her back fellas. just let me know anytime she's free so I can squeeze in some weekend private time with her to output.

and ASAP I'll release this little thing I made on Zak while he was coloring I F*CKING HATE YOU if anyone wants to see it.

Peace,
kks

tim, we'll get that up asap. right now i'm concentrating on exporting my quicktime for IFHY. i'm on my third version, trying to get as close to 50mb as possible. i'm impressed with what compressor is able to do. just wish its "file size estimate" was more accurate. what i've found is doing a variable bit rate on the audio has bought me a considerable amount of room to reallocate back to picture.

Fellow Filmmakers,

Over the years, I’ve observed the incredible community spirit that surrounds these fests, and i’ve longed to be a part of it. The stories, the friendships, the ribbing and the critical feedback are what makes this fest so unique. It’s a valuable community experience for an indie filmmaker, and like nothing else i’ve ever seen.

With the announcement of LoveFest, I had to be a part of it. Production on “Heart of Now” just wrapped, so I had little reason not to. A minute hadn't gone by before I started the very first thread announcing a LoveFest entry – my DVXFest debut: “UNITITLED - a film by Sabi”.

In the beginning, I drew upon existing friendships forged during “Heart of Now” – Marion, John, Matt Garrett and “my babycakes”, Jamie. We came together to make something from nothing and it’s a 9 minute piece we are all very proud of – charming little flaws included. But what happened next, was unexpected. In sharing the stories from the set and the screenshots with other filmmakers, I found myself a part of that community experience I had admired from a distance for far too long.

I remember batting a few PM’s back and forth with Luis Caffesse, encouraging him to get involved. At the time, Matt Garrett was looking for a story to set in a record store and I suggested he submit a story idea. i’m not taking credit for getting the ball rolling, I’m just very happy to see Luis is now in this with a fully produced entry of his own. Recently, I had a late night phone call with Jack Daniel Stanley. It was a pleasure chatting it up with him and I hope our paths cross a number of times down the road. It was a surprise when Mark Harris contacted me for feedback on another project he’s developing. That he thought enough of me to ask, meant something to me. And then there was that down-to-the-wire phone call from Tim Hyten where we went over options for export settings. My only regret is that we don't have a J.R. Hudson Reel this time around. That being said, none of these relationships would have been formed if there wasn't a forum for me to throw my hat into the ring, without even a nugget of an idea.

I have yet to meet any of these people in person, and I hope one day to remedy that. And the potential for new friendships and working relationships would not exist if it weren't for this DVXFest. So it is with immeasurable gratitude that I offer my thanks to all the people working behind the scenes of LoveFest and each of the filmmakers putting their ideas out there for the world to admire.

Thank you, you beautiful f*cking bastards...

Zak

SYNOPSIS:

I F*CKING HATE YOU is a raw, whimsical glimpse into a young man's ill-conceived scheme to redeem himself in the eyes of his ex-girlfriend. Ron (John T. Woods) lures Carol (Marion Kerr) back to his apartment under the pretense that he is going to return her favorite mug. But when it seems that this will be their last moment together, Ron attempts to strike a chord with her in the only way he knows how.

SPOILERS:

This was good! It felt REAL, and that's a compliment. I really felt like I was spying on this moment. Loved the look of it as well, it was very well shot and framed.

My only gripe is that I think most women would have been running for the exit during the second or third verse of the song. :D

Seriously though, I really liked this one a lot. I'll pop by later with a deeper review.

Cheers!

Mike

hey thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words. and so do John and Marion. their characters really were the heart and soul of this piece. I'm excited to debut the 9 minute version after the fest is over.
