I just got a link (friend of a friend) to a Production Manager/Executive
Producer. But I'm really just curious waht, exactly, does the
Production Manager do.
Thank you experienced people-

Executive Producer
AKA: Executive in Charge of Production
A producer who is not involved in any technical aspects of the filmmaking process, but who is still responsible for the overall production. Typically an executive producer handles business and legal issues.
Production Manager
AKA: PM
Reporting to the film's producer, this person supervises the budget, hires the crew, approves purchase orders & time cards, and generally makes sure all departments are doing their respective jobs within the parameters of the budget.

a Production Manager is often referred to as the UPM or Unit Production Manager, as this is indeed technically correct term. Qualified Unit Production Managers in the USA are represented under the Director's Guild of America.

Just an extra tidbit to go along with all these great answers. In a low/no budget film, the UPM can also be doubled as your AD. On the film I'm on now, our Producer is doubling as our UPM, so there's really no rules here. Also, many consider the UPM the PM, but 'on set', as opposed to the PM who handles all the above issues in pre-production, leaving the UPM to handle immediate on set concerns, in the areas listed above, if that makes sense. Anywhoo, good luck.

To further clarify the post above, in indie film there aren't set rules...however in Union films, duties, roles and responsabilities are very well defined and regulated under the DGA for UPM's and AD's.
Even in the DGA, a UPM is generally expected to rise from the ranks of AD's, so there's a lot of overlap in the area.

Ah, good thing you're around for clarity. I was strictly speaking non-union. Good points.

I have read the responses here...now what if your doing the One Man Band type thing as in your the Shooter, Director, Editor, Producer....what is the title of that person....that person being ME! LOL! On all of my projects in 2004 I put myself as the Executive Producer in the credits. Is that the wrong title? For some projects, I just put "Produced by"
