Photographing your subject

Theres more than just being photogenic,
Sometimes I take photos of people who dont mind being in front of the camera tend to "over do" it or just seemed too ready when I take their picture.
Is there a way to calm their nerves and make them more relaxed?

Can you explain in a little more detail ? Is this a photoshoot you're talking about , pictures of friends, a wedding , etc
