Shooting Day For Night...help!

Does anyone have experience shooting day for night?

For example, I want to shoot a scene in the park during the day time, and either in post or on set shoot so that it "looks" like night time. I've read around about using day for night tiffen filters and ND filters, and have even tried a couple of post plugins to get this effect...Does any recommend or have experience trying to do so? Please help!
