View Full Version : Why the delay on forum searches?

Does this defeat spam bots or something? Almost any time I want to search the archives I have to try a few different things... and for example, just now I wanted to show some guy a thread about the 302, since his question has been well-answered several times... I was going to make a point about how easy it is to search... and at the same time give him a little sarcasm about how some posts just sit without responses because "everybody" knows that the question has been answered several times already.

So then when I want to post a searched thread from the archives I have to sit and waste a couple of minutes because my initial search has some issue and it says "try again in 52 seconds."

 What's up with that? Why control the rate of search? Can you imagine if Google did that? I'd throw my computer out the window. If this has been answered in the past I'm sorry... I had time to kill between searches.

LOL. Yeah it can be frustrating.

It's basically to throttle server load.

Each serach, the server has to process a sizable chunk of the database (we are past a million posts now..) and that demands CPU time.

Limeting the frequency of the searches helps trottle down the requirements on the server.

Incidentally, you can search specific sites using google ... it only works for the pages that google has craweled (not the entire databse), so it won't pick up the very latest posts. but generally a "site search" through google can go a long was to finding stuff on forums.

BTW, you can't search for "302" only 4 letter words or longer. :)
