Okay apple makes hardware. If you buy a mac your locked in. Why not make ProRes available to all apps on the Mac? If After Effects,Avid, etc. could use ProRes on Macs it better experience for All video editors and designers. The goal is to sell more Macs now that Premiere and Avid are on Macs you might get professionals to jump the windows ship with a feature like this. Once the user buys his $3000 mac he might consider buying FCP studio for $1300 down the road. If he sticks to windows it won't happen. Even if they made it so that Leopard was required to make all apps use ProRes it still would be huge.
