microphone attachment?

tried searching for this but -

anyone here have a way to attach a boom mic to the camera?

(forgive me if its obvious, i dont own the camera and this is a question from a friend who might buy the camera)

There is a shoe mount on top of the camera, underneath a removable piece of plastic. You can attach a mount and microphone there, but check the fit because it's a little snug. Here's a few pics.
