I'm trying to capture direct to my MacBook Pro through fire wire into Final Cut Pro.

Here's what I'm doing:

1) Plugging in camera etc. Setting to 720 24p

2) Opening FCP

3) Setting capture settings to FireWire NTSC and DVCPRO HD 720p 24 48kHz

4) Pressing record button on the camera

5) Clicking the "now" button as in capture now in FCP.

**It starts to record for a second then it says you have reached the end of the tape. It creates a a mini clip about 2 seconds long and that's it.

What am I doing wrong here?

You don't need to press anything on the camera. As long as the camera is powered, it is sending a signal through firewire. Just hit Capture Now in FCP.

Hmm... When I don't press record first it doesn't work. It says something about the VTR.

You may want to try this

1. Power the camara
2. On the back of the camera, make sure the Media switch is set to P2. Press the Mode button to switch the camera to MCR/VCR mode. You will see clip thumbnails in the viewer.

3. go to the first clip
4. Press " Capture Now " in FCP
5. Then Play on the camera

What are you trying to do? Are you trying to capture live from the camera or stream a clip from a P2 card out through firewire?

Phil Here the steps you need to take.

1) With Camera off. Plug in the 1394 cable and plug into MBP.
2) Turn on Camera and set Record mode to 720p/24p - PN wont work, so dont Try.
3) Open up Final Cut.
4) Easy Set up > DVCPro 720p/24p
5) Create new project, or use existing, 720p/24p timeline project.
6) Close all windows EXCEPT the BROWSER window, but resize to as small as it can go. Just dont close your project in the Browser, Dont eve touch the browser window.:)
7) Hit CMND+8 and it will open the Log and Capture window.
8) Logging Tab will be the visable on the left. In the description tag type your date or whatever, description will make your filename that.
9) Switch to the Clips Settings. Select only the channels of Audio you are using. The Speaker icon should be BRIGHT GREEN, That means it is selected and will record with Video.
10) Switch to the Capture Settings Tab. MAKE SURE DEVICE CONTROL is set to NON-Controllable Device. And the Capture/Input is set for what you are recording.
11) Open up the Finder create a new folder in refrence to the Project you are shooting, and if there are multi-days, make name the Folder Day1 and Select your SCRATCH DISK to that folder.

12) HIT NOW and you are off Capturing.

If this helps you out, please take the time and let me know.

Thanks

SurJones, you are the man! Thank you so much! Works like a charm. Great, detailed instructions. There should be a sticky made on this. I don't remember it being in Barry's book. There's more to it than just plugging in and clicking capture now. Excellent! So, there's no loss here right? Perfect 720p 24p? If so, I can do all my interviews this way now!!!!
