I am new to the HVX200 and wonder if anyone can clarify some confusion.
We want to use the Variable Frame Rate to create true slow motion but as far as we can tell, this is not possible while using the FS-100 because when in VFR mode the firewire output is disabled. Is this correct?
Is there any way of shooting true slow motion without forking out for expensive P2 cards and reader?
Thanks.

v.4 firmware for the Firestore permits variable frame rates

You can record slomotion with ANY version of the Firestore firmware (as far as I remember).
It's just a matter of using panasonic's framerate converter in post to conform the footage to the new framerate.
When using the FS-100 you can never use the PN modes, as the HVX disables the firewire output in those modes. Instead shoot in 720/24P and set your framerate to whatever you want to shoot at. The FS-100 will then record the full 60fps signal (duplicate frames and all). In post you will have to then run those clips through the Frame Rate Converter and will wind up exporting new 24fps files to be used in your 24fps timeline.
This is exactly how people dealt with slomo footage shot on the Varicam, which always records 60fps onto tape.
The V.4 Firmware simply allows you to skip the step of using the framerate converter, leaving you with native variable framerate files that can be dropped into your timeline straight off the FS-100 drive. So it made it easier, but it was always possible.
But, regardless - its a moot point because any FS-100 you get now will have v.4 firmware on it.
So the answer to your question is yes, you can record variable frame rates using the FS-100.

Thanks a lot for the answers, it sounds promising. We'll give it a go----

Camera Resolution Must be set to the corresponding 720P Mode and not the 720PN mode for VFR recordings.
VFR setting s are supported in the 4.x versions only.
VFR Mode is Inactive for non-PN DV FORMATS.
AUDIO is not recorded in VFR recording modes .
Steps:
1- Set SCENE FILE > OPERATION TYPE is set to FILM CAM
2- Set SCENE FILE > FRAME RATE to FPS
3- SEt Recording Setup > UB MODE to FRM RATE
4- Set RECORDING SETUP > RECORD FORMAT to:
NTSC: 720/24p or 720/30p
Pal: 720/25p
FS-100 Settings:
1- Set DV FORMAT to QUICKTIME PN or P2PN.
2- Set SETUP > VFR MODE to the appropriate base frame rate:
Input stream VFR Mode
720/24p 24
720/25p 25
720/30p 30
While recording in VFR mode, VF is displayed on HOME screen.
