How does the info provided by the distance marking help during a shoot? What can it be used for?
Thanks in advance.

Can you give me an example how?How can this info be used to better focus along with using a monitor and my focus ring? Sorry if this is a really dumb question -- I am obviously new to all of this.

If you know how far away your subject is, then you can get accurate focus using the distance readout of the LCD/EVF. You'd want to set it to display meters/centimeters or feet/inches instead of a percentage if you haven't done so yet.
There are lots of ways to get the distance -- guestimates, measuring tape, or a laser distance meter from Sears.
