Hi all:

Recently ordered a Letus Extreme, Cavision mount, Red Rock FF and rods and I am almost set.

I am pondering over what to get for a matte box. I have read the tests and reviews and have some questions. Right now, I use the Cokin P Series filters for both still and video work. I do get some vignetting on the HVX and DVX so I am not thrilled with this solution but otoh, the Cokin seems to work fine with my still camera, with no vignetting.

1. I am confused as to what the relative advantages and disadvantages are with 3x3", versus 4x4" versus 4x5.6" filter sizes are. I realize that the wide filters are supposed to be for the 16:9 aspect ratio on the HD but if you are using 35mm still lenses, even a 3x3" can cover the entire field of the still 35mm lens. So why would I need or want 4x4 or 4x5.6"? I do know that there is a tremendous amount of cost difference between the filters of these three sizes.

2. Since I have rails, I obviously want a rail mount matte box. It would make sense that I want french flag and side flags, at least one rotatable stage. Barry has recommended the Vocas, others have chimed in for other brands. What do you recommend and why. I am eager to see the Red Rock as soon as they release it.

Thanks for your advice and recommendations.

We use 4x4s and lenses as wide as 18mm. As long as the box is properly designed, you should be fine with 4x4 filters.
