View Full Version : Comparing Horror Fest to Hallows Fest...

Michael Anthony Horrigan

I just watched a few entries from Horror Fest, especially the top vote getters.

I guess my question is this....

Will Hallows Fest be as bloody as Horror Fest? I'm getting the feeling that it won't be. Horror implies gore to some degree or another. I'm predicting that Hallows Fest will be more sinister, and less bloody. Or maybe just a little creepy...

The theme of darkness might come in strong as well. I guess we'll see.

I know that I'm using the theme of darkness to the ninth degree.

Any predictions?

Will Hallows Fest be full of blood and gore?

I don't think so.

I'm preparing myself for a bunch of Hostel and Saw rip-offs; which sucks.

People seem to think watching people get tortured or mutilated is exciting or scary. It isn't.

It is the suspense and thrills leading up to that which makes me cringe. A masterpiece like Halloween (Original) had minimal gore and is one of the scariest films ever made, same for The Shining.

Even a film like the The Thing. No one talks about the gore, they talk about the men at Outpost 31. The paranoia is what was scary.

Showing us Goreporn is mindless.

-

I'm hoping to see some good old fashioned Storyltelling; tales of macabre and spoooky events. If I see a SAW riff-off, I'll tune out.

I agree completely.

Not bashing anyone else's entries... which we haven't seen yet. Just hoping that there is some kind of story involved.

100% agreed with Hudson. I hope nobody's gonna try to submit any "torture porn"; let's see some suspense, thrills, and darkness instead.

No gore or blood in mine. Mine's pretty much PG. I'm mainly just doing it as a test, since I haven't really done my own narrative film project before. Another reason I'm not too worried about meeting the deadline. I'm a noob.

AHhh shit

Jokes.. -cough-

Mines a HARD 'R Rating' though, it sorta goes against the invisible rules of filmmaking.

I've got a little of everything in mine, I think. I believe the story is what will hopefully make it stand out though. Halloween (the original) was definately an inspiration.

Add me to the list of people who agree with Hudson.

I hope there are some good stories in this fest.

I'm partial to
"Goreno"
(the term not the sub-genre)

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but I agree with Hudson also, Saw and Hostel are just mindless, and the whole torture/gore without rhyme or reason has been played to death, literally!

I agree with myself. :)

Less blood, more story. That's my prediction....

Still, I'm looking forward to some bloody and gruesome tales.

I think a lot of us make a distinction between cartoon gore like Evil Dead, Dead Alive / Brain Dead, real gore in things like Texas Chainsaw, or even Devil's
Rejetcs where you see something happen ... and films where they show you the torture instrument, show you the area it will be applied, show you the torture instrument approaching the area, and then have an entire scene of graphically applying the knife, blow torch, ax, battery cables in clinical detail.

One is about making the gore real enough so that you are scared that it will happen to the protagonist / you ... the other is about something else ... much like a film like Basic Instinct - pure entertainment drivel - is about the interplay with the characters even though it has the famous "shot seen round the world" but if you want to see genital pounding penetration up close and personal, that's a another kind of movie.

There's also a difference between the cathartic and fun gallons of blood in Evil Dead and Dead Alive and Gorno as well.

So bear in mind that most of the old timers here that say they don't go much for the kids these days and their Gorno, delight and thrill at seeing a head lopped off and blood spray all over the wall in your classic (70's-90's) horror film, make films of that nature, and buy tickets to see them.

There's a difference, we're not anti-gore, just anti-gore porn though not really "anti" speaking for myself, so much as somewhat uncomfortable watching, though I choose to cringe through them anyway sometimes.

I don't know... maybe I'm doing it wrong but the people I had over last night put up quite a fight.
Nothing easy about it.

I didn't care for the gore in this fest. I usually turn it if I see it on the screen. There's no entertainment value in watching that shit.

Well.. I finished watching all the films, and man. I'm having a hard time even picking my top 5. Does anyone else think it was kind of weak this time around?

Don't get me wrong, HUGE congrats and kudos to those who finished the films but I think last years films were so much better on so many levels.

I'm having a hard time even picking my top 5.

Top 5?
I thought we only had to pick our top 3.
Hmmm maybe I'm not paying close enough attention.

_____________
EDITED TO ADD:
Just checked - it is top 3 - from the voting rules post:

After watching all the films, please send me (Barry S) a private message with your post count and your top 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices for best film. You must vote for three different films for your vote to be counted and you may vote for your own film. All votes are kept completely confidential.

Edgen

Yea, it's the top 3 films for voting. Usually I'm torn between at least 10 films that I think deserve to win. I'm having a difficult time choosing between those 5. Well. 4 actually. Maybe it's just a bad genre for me. Dunno. regardless, Looking forward to the next fest.

Yeah, I'm with you on that...I've got it narrowed down to about 4 or so.
Going to give it a few days and revisit them.

We'll all grow. xD I hope I will, anyway.

I would have to agree... I think last year's horrorfest had a lot better films...

Michael Anthony Horrigan
11-04-2007, 06:08 AM
I would be interested in comparing the top 3 from Horror Fest to the top 3 in Hallows Fest. There are a few movies in Hallows Fest that could stand up beside some of the top movies in Horror Fest. IMHO
I did love Rekindled though...

I guess we'll see who gets the top 3 this time around.

Either way, if you have watched all of the movies... please add critiques to all of the threads. It's the only way that we're going to get better.

Cheers,

Mike
