Hello all, not wanting to sound to naive but will these two cameras compete for the same market? Apart from the removable lenses and shoulder mount why should I buy the HPX500 over the EX1.

Depends on what your shooting and your budgets. Obviously lenses are a big issue for Pro work, and another thing it writes in MP4 (yuck) no thanks
I dont think you can compare the 2. 1 is a serious shoulder mount ENG camera with pro lenses. The other is a handheld prosumer handy cam - though a probably a pretty good one.
We could never use a camera like that on a serious shoot. We would prob lose clients. Size is everything!
A better comparison would be between the 202 and the EX1
IMHO
Interesting that Sony are now moving to Flash memory. I think the XDCAM disk format wont be around for much longer.

Don't forget that the Hpx500 has a 2/3" imager, versus the EX1's 1/2". That means the HPX500 should enjoy better low-light performance, and due to the longer lenses its imager calls for, you'll get a shallower depth of field (ie, you'll find it easier to throw your background out of focus, which is generally a good thing).
