View Full Version : Reviewing unflipped 35mm adapter footage

Okay, so I've started shooting with a local creative agency doing fashion stuff, product shots, and the like. They're keen on my using the SGPro and DVX, as well as editing the video afterwards. However, their process is to first view the raw footage shot on the day, giving me notes in the form of timecodes indicating different shots they liked and want to see in the final edit.

This is all well and good, but the image coming onto the tape is, of course, upside-down and backwards. I've explained this to them and they're fine with it, but it doesn't help them when it comes time to review the footage. Temporarily, I've offered to flop the shots in my NLE, then print it back out to another tape to hand in the next day after shooting. It's what I'm doing right now, after my first day of shooting, but I really don't want to keep doing it if there's another way. For one thing, it means using up twice the amount of tapes for shooting (thankfully I only shot about 1 1/2 tapes today), and additionally, it's a hassle for me (since rendering a flop filter for a full tape takes about 45 minutes on my system, and then I still have to print to tape in real time!)

I don't really have the details of how they plan to review the footage. They're a photography company looking to add video to their offerings, so all their equipment is based around that (i.e. they don't have video production monitors that could easily do the flip). Is there some way to flip the signal between a video-out port and the display, if it's a TV? Any other suggestions as to how this might be accomplished?

As I said, I have a temporary fix, but I really don't want to keep doing this. It took a couple hours to log all the footage (granted, I would've needed to do that regardless) and remove the pulldown, and now it's gonna take a few more hours to render the filter and print to tape.

Any suggestions* are much appreciated!

*...as long as it's not "buy a flip adapter" :)

Tell them to turn their monitor upside-down... sorry joking

Here's two suggestions:

1. VLC (http://www.videolan.org/) has a filter that will rotate footage 180 degres on playback. That's what I often use. Video cards like the ATI radeonX series have HDTV output that can go directly to a 1080P panel so you're set.

2. If you capture using Adobe OnLocation (from a laptop firewire) you can also record "corrected" footage as the software has the flip feature. The laptop (particularly if you use one with a 1920x1080 screen) does a nice job helping with focus too.

We have an optical flip module coming that would work with your SG..just in case 1 and 2 don't work for you :-)

Thanks for the replies (especially Dennis ;) )

I'll look into both of those options (and maybe even the flip module, we'll see...)
