I just got the upgraded gear box for my Indifocus gear and it's a serious improvement over the original gear box. Of course I want the new indifocus now........Hmm....

Ram, what's improved? only backlash? what about that moving lenses problem seen on freshdv review? is new indifocus a bit wider?
Thanks and regards

I only have the new gearbox with the older indifocus, the old gearbox had a lot of backlash this one virtually has none. I have only been able to use mine with the friction wheel so far, but as son as my Letus 35 Extreme gets here I can tell you more.

Tempted to invest in the new IndiFocus pro based on the presentation alone. =\ Waiting on Redrock's Micro Remote, though.
Site looks much better.
i feel quite stupid because i just bought a few new gears and a whip.. and didn't view the freshdv review beforehand... because the old whip just seems to be crap :(

Guys, I'm waiting to hear from Tim at indifocus if I can upgrade not just the gearbox, but because I want the the stronger arm bracket and also the cool new handle. I'll let you know when I hear.
Jshooter, from conversations with Tim the new stronger arm bracket is supposed to stop the problem highlighted in the DV fresh review with the arm jumping away when set up high. I prefer to mount my lens gear low anyway, so its out of the way and making lens changes easier.
XAX,
they look good, i will order one of those gearbox upgrades for sure!
i just wANT to know what "lens gear drivers" are....
I believe lens gear drivers are going to be 3 different sized gears for use on the indifocus which will give you different 'pull' speeds. So a smaller gear would drive the lens gear quicker as there's less teeth compared to a larger gear.
i feel quite stupid because i just bought a few new gears and a whip.. and didn't view the freshdv review beforehand... because the old whip just seems to be crap
I'd drop Tim a polite pm or email and just enquire about the whip. Maybe there's a better one in the making that you might be able to upgrade to. Just see what your options are. It sounds like the new square mount version is supposed to fix it in solid but it looks like you'll need a new handle for the follow focus unit itself. I don't know about the actual whip arm itself. Tim's a cool guy.
Tim, I gotta hand it to you, you pulled it out of the bag. I love the new FF unit and everything, new products and the site look great.

Tim actually incorporates a lot if not all of the objective criticism on freshdv review. The whole for the whip is standard now and a lot of improvements were made along the lines of those observations (not just backlash reduction).
I ordered 2 IndiFocusPro sets (and even the IndiBracePro). I'll let you guys know how they work (not that I'm a pro; very far from it indeed). The new FFocus is supposed to work well with lenses attached onto 35mm adapters.
I also had several conversations with Tim and he's supposed to be working on a Ladder Dolly Kit (IndiLadderDolly Kit might be the name) that would allow us to use a T-Shaped Dolly mounted on a regular aluminum ladder as an alternate Track device. The kit will have the necessary equipments to even mount the ladder on 2 tripods for all kinds of cool positioning resulting in amazing smooth shots. I'll keep you updated. I'm supposed to be receiving the design blue prints this weekend.
By the way, I'm just a simple customer. A new user in fact.
cool! i hope there is a full review like there was for the previous indiefocus! was very helpful and stopped me from buying, but would love to see these new additions!

It's will work with the rail system, and with the stock HXV lens with the friction wheel. I would prefer having a real gear that the friction wheel but it does work, I've tried it on mine.

Hi Ram
Thanks for the quick reply. That allows me to use it now as well expand it to use 35mm adapter lens in the future.
IndiFocus have a Pro c/w Gear , Quote "Based on the indiFOCUSpro this package includes three lens gears, lens gear driver, and an additional gear in Cine pitch [0.8]." kit. Would these lens gears fit the HVX lens or are they mainly for 35mm adapter lens.

Those gears are only for 35mm Lenses, they offer a friction wheel for the stock lens.

The more I look at it, the more I want it. That new handle with glow in the dark option. Way cool.
Tim any word on if I wanted to upgrade more than just the gearbox? Like if I wanted the new handle as well? I love it - it looks great.
The white outer disc on the new handle looks a lot smaller than the 'classic' version [I believe you call it now]. This makes for a more compact unit and probably brings it more in-line with other follow focus units.
Hang on a minute, bigger white disc on the old version, but the new one is smaller, more like the size of the other FFs out there? Hmmm... interesting... Any Redrock, Cinetech, Petroff or Chroziel follow focus users reading this, can you measure the diameter of your white disc and get back to me either in this thread or by PM? Thanks!
I'll be back later, got something to test...
Thanks,
Richard

I had emailed the guy(s) at indifocus but hadnt gotten a response, so I thought I'd see if anyone here knows...I want to use their new indirails for the letus extreme with my HVX, I was originally going to go with Cavision, but these rods come in longer sizes...will they work with that setup? I've heard the vertical offset on the extreme is 44mm with no horizontal offset so I assume these can work. And if the guy who owns indifocus is reading this, how long will it take to ship? If I understand correctly, these are a new product and just wondered if there was a production lag time.
Thanks,
Mark.

The new site looks great but it needs more pictures, so you know what each piece looks like(like all the addons). Also there's no pics of the rig assembled. Also the shoulder mount looks different than the beta version, is it gonna be more expensive than $99 now?

Well my new indiFOCUSpro gearbox arrived. I can't understand how come the review came off so wrong as there's less than 0.5mm of play in the gearbox. I've got to set it up properly, but there's no way its 5-6mm.
The only thing I can think of is the old and the new gearboxes look identical. Tim, it might be possible when you sent the test unit for the shootout, you may have put in an old gearbox by mistake? I ask that as the old gearbox had 5-6mm of play in it, but definately not this new one. Once I set it up properly, I'll shoot on video with mm markers just how much it moves.
I think the DV Fresh boys set it up right, and tested it right, but it must have been the older box put in by accident.
I tell ya though, it ain't even gonna be close to 1 mm.
I'll post it over the next couple of nights.
Thanks.

I have a set of these and they will work fine. I have one concern though, the tripod mount is directly under the camera (not adjustable) and the setup is going to be very front heavy. I don't want to put extra weight on the back so I'm truying to figure out another mounting solution for a balanced setup. I imagine someone sells a clamp on tripod mount for rails.

Well the rest of my indiFOCUSpro upgrades arrived. Fedex did a sterling job at the US to UK end and then managed to keep my package at the local depot for 5 days.
Finally I got them to release it and it arrived. Here are the pictures on my SGPro rails. I've not put the camera on as I only had time to test it with lenses on rails in terms of set up.
See the pictures [apologies for the poor quality of lighting].

I think you'll agree the new handle looks great. It looks like an arri handle to me in terms of size and feel. It looks like it belongs on a Panavision or an Arri 35 ! The photos on the website make it look smaller than it actually is. Its probably just me but in real life its a meaty piece of kit.
The whip mount looks rock solid and its the square industry standard. So I'll be ordering a new whip soon.
The play in the gearbox I've tested is virtually non-existent. At the moment I would rate it at less than 0.5 of a milimeter. Its probably more like 0.3 of a mm.
I'll be filming that soon with a close up of the measurements as I test the play in front of the camera.
In terms of focus pulling, its a tight, smooth ride. Its not a free spin, instead its steady, firm and precise.
Comparing the new gearbox to the old, you really can feel the lack of play. Its like when Redrock went over from the Huco gearboxes to their new custom ones. Something Tim has done or has ordered means that whilst the gearboxes look identical to the original used in the indiFOCUS, the play is now virtually non-existent. I can't stress that enough.
Any older users of the indiFOCUS, I recommend both a new gearbox and a new handle. They are wise investments !
Thanks for your time,
Richard

I'm not sure if Cinevate will sell them separately, but their tripod adapter would slide very nicely onto your rails and do exactly what you need it to.

Thanks alot, Richard. I'm sold. One queston. Are those lens gears in the picture the indifocus gears?
majormorgan
10-31-2007, 07:49 PM
Hiya Arrik,
yes the lens gears I've shown are the indiFOCUSpro types. They are 1.0 as opposed to the industry standard 0.8. The great thing is if you buy the indiFOCUSpro geared version, not only will you get the indifocus gear driver and len gears [1.0] but you'll also get a cinegear driver [0.8] free for use with pro lenses that are already geared. You just swap the head over.
If you decide before buying that you don't need the indifocus gears, you can always buy the base model at $299 and then buy the cinegear driver for just $22. But you'll either need lenses with 0.8 gears built into them, or if you decide you want to buy 0.8 lens gears from somewhere else, it will all be compatible.
For me I bought the indifocus ones to save on budget and they work just great. But when I upgrade my lenses or rent cine lenses, I have the cinegear driver already to install in seconds.
Enjoy !
Best regards,
Richard

RAM,
Tim said, the handle upgrade is $50 for 'classic' owners to get the new handle [don't know about shipping].
For classic upgrades of the new gearbox and the new handle its $100 saving $5.
I don't know how much the lit handles are though.
He also says these purchase options will be on the site soon. But you can always email him in advance !
Thanks

Is there a practical (not just aesthetic) advantage to the new handle that would make me spend the money?
If you get the new handle does that mean you can use the new square whips?
Can you use the Redrock gears with an IndiFocus? The RR ones look easier on the lens ring and quicker to put on.

Are you upgrading an old indiFOCUS or are you buying a new one? If its the new one then you will get the new handle anyway. Its if you want to swap your new handle for a light up one.
If you are upgrading your old infiFOCUS to the new handle, it does have the industry standard accessory mount [square mount] and this new mount is supposed to lock in the new whips.
Also the new handle feels better to pull focus with. Its a nice grip and feels sturdy.
And it does look fantastic on the camera. The handle is bigger than it looks on the website. To me it looks like an arri focus handle, but that's my personal opinion.
Redrock gears:
As the RR are the cine standard 0.8 you would need to buy the cinegear for the indifocus - this is a gear that's 0.8 and should work with the RR lens gears. If you are buying new and don't want the indifocus gears, then just buy the indiFOCUSpro basic unit and order the cinegear as well.
For me the indiFOCUSpro lens gears work just fine.
Anyways, enjoy !!
Thanks,
Richard

That's what were waiting for. Ideally it would be great for DV Fresh to re-review it along with the SGPro follow focus and any others that didn't have one ready at the time.
Already the new one ticks off the boxes that the old one had issues with. So in that respect it brings it right out of where it was reviewed.
Think of this unit as Rocky Balboa. An independent with the power to challenge the heavyweight champions of the world. Ding, ding. Round 01...

IndiFocus, RedRock FF, SGpro FF, HysonFilms FF - suddenly thereŽs a lot to choose from (or wait for :cheesy:...)
This new freedom of choice comes with the fear of choosing a bad product - I really hope someone takes on a comparison soon, IŽd pay for that article...
I'm a one man band and really need hard stops. The not yet released hyson is supposed to have dual hard stops, what about the RR, SG and Indi?
indifocus has dual hard stops.
