View Full Version : Shifted HVX

I have a shifted HVX and can't seem to find edge to edge sharpness with my M2. Is there another adapter that can still achieve edge to edge sharpness with a shifted HVX or am I "up the river without a paddle?"

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is a "shifted" HVX?

Shapeshifted maybe? Into a Red???

This picture is from the RR forum.

"Shifted" meaning the CCD block is slightly out of alignment. It seems to be a fairly common problem among HVX users.

Can't you send it back to Panasonic? This is a fault after all.

It's their fault, technically, but I doubt it's causing a problem when the M2 is not attached. As such, I doubt Panny would do anything about it, although it never hurts to ask. Off-center optics have been the bane of many adapter users.

my only advice to you short of sending the camera back is to zoom in enough on the ground glass to cover the frame..

I stop down the camera more which seems to help, but then I am losing another stop, to a stop and a half of light.

I'd try sending it back to Pany, you have the right to get one that does not have this flaw, and you should be able to use the product for other third party accessories that are based on the "normal" model. There is a law somewhere stating this in some more difficult terms of course, but it's the same.

I just called Panny and they said a tech would call me back soon. I wonder if Jan could shed some light on this subject...

On the legal side, my father is a corporate lawyer and it would be my absolute last resort to take any legal action. I love him to death, but who likes to deal with legal bull. Not me!

Are you sure you are centered on the Redrock adapter. I spent a couple ofdays with mine before it was right and had to make a number of adjustments inside.

I use the hard mount. Also, when I put the 82->72 stepdown ring on by itself, I can see the edge of the stepdown only on one side of the image.

You are assuming the redrock is perfectly aligned and your HVX200 is not. I would not make that assumption, though I may be wrong.

As I remember the mount inside the RR can be moved a bit.
I screwed around with mine alot before I got it center to my camera.

It's very well known and discussed on other forums that the HVX can have this alignment issue. I own the M2 and the Brevis and I'm fortunate that my HVX is pretty well aligned. However my DP also has the HVX and his is off (both with the M2 and the Brevis). Not only is the sensor off, but it enhances any side flaws these adapters have (pulling, smearing, edge focus).

Hopefully Panasonic can help your mis-aligned camera (I know that some others have had success sending it back according to some other forums).

Good luck

Thanks,
i've heard of this & maybe to some extent have the same problem, but have always assumed it was an adapter problem. How does this happen physically?
What is misaligned with this shift? I have always assumed that if my lens tracks fine and seems in focus to all corners that all is fine. With other adapters I have been fine corner to corner sharpness . but with the Redrock had to realign the screen.

I have the same problem and had to use the xy adjustment on the Brevis. Rumor has it that Panasonic uses monkeys to hand place the imaging block. Just a rumor though.

Are you serious???

I am regarding the hand placement (not the monkeys, they'd do a better job) which may explain why some are off center by varying degrees. I can't remeber where I read it, but regardless it is a pain in the ass.

So the Brevis XY adjustment did the job? Or maybe I should take out a student loan and get a red:happy:
