View Full Version : 1/120th Shutter speed test with the Letus Exteme

Some people were asking if the Extreme could handle fast shutter speeds...

Shots from my daughter's soccer game. My computer is still messed up so I wasn't really able to see what selections I used in the edit so ignore the quality of the shooting (focus, framing, etc.).

XHA1 @ 24f with Letus Extreme and 200mm Nikon f4 (Nikon was open for all of these shots). Slight levels adjustment... 1/120th shutter speed. I did not try any other shutter speeds, sorry.

Downrezzed to 720p

Ah Haaaaaaaaa!
I see where your focus pulling skills are coming from. I need a soccor player in my family too. lol

Holy Cow, Disjecta. Nice footage - Very nice footage, especially for shooting a 200mm and maintaining focus - are you pulling with a follow focus or by the lens itself?

Awesome, man - thanks for sharing.

Just focusing with the lens itself...no external monitor :)

Good work!
People say you can't focus hdv/hd with a 35mm adapter and no external monitor. You must be one with this camera by now.

Like literally fused to the camera with the adapter on it. Who needs a chainsaw arm when you can pull killer focus on the fly like that?

I'm impressed - I think a benefit though is having the image flipped of course and I would also think that using the peaking on the camera would help when using the onboard LCD - all that aside, pulling 200mm for action is not easy. I expect a car or footchase at that shutter speed, Disjecta, now that you've had a chance to warm up on sporting events :)

Really the reason why I wanted to show this is because it makes slow motion shots viable. Although I didn't shoot 60i for this sequence, if I had, I could have used the classic formula using 1/120th shutter speed to get some nice results.

man, the wait for my Extreme gets harder everytime you post footage :D

Looks pretty amazing disjecta, it appears the Letus Extreme will indeed live up to the hype.

Thanks for posting

As I recall, the last time I looked the Brevis CF1L also could handle a 1/120th shutter as does an SGPro. But maybe others should chime in on that.
Until they are compared head to head by someone, it sounds like in specs the Brevis and the Letus Extreme are in the same ballpark. It may come down to aesthetics, taste and mechanics once the Bevis Flip is out.

Nobody was questioning if Brevis or SGPro could do this. Both of those products are tried and true.
It had been bought up in another thread about the Extremes ability to handle higher shutter speeds with its vibrating -vs- rotating glass.

Yeah. I'm wondering when anyone compared the Letus to anything else in this thread? He just posted footage of his cam at 1/120 shutter.

I hope people aren't getting over-sensitive about these adapters...

Okay, just so we are all clear, I wasn't posting this footage to say the Extreme can do what other adapters cannot. It was simply a test to say that the Extreme, by itself, is viable for slow motion using the 1/120 shutter formula.

I am by no means trying to discredit other adapters.

Sorry I really didn't mean to imply that Disjecta was trying to discredit anything else - I love the stuff he is posting. Its a great service to all of us. I was just chiming in myself probably because I know that we all are wondering how these guys compare.

If he's comparing it to anything, it's to the L35FE. The test footage here shows significant improvement over how an L35FE would have handled that same shutter speed.

Stephen -

Over last few weeks, I've been having issues while playing back your footage.

Tried on a Mac AND two PCs of varying age. Image quality is superb, but motion is stuttered, almost non-existent. As if playing back stills. My Windows media players are up to date.

Any clues? Or anyone else having these issues?

thanks

i tested this out with my friends brevis the other day, with the cfl1 diffuser, and we saw on his canon XH A1, at -3db gain, iris completely open, no ND filter, that at 1/90th, the grain started to become apparent.

Not sure Chuck but maybe it has to do with horse power. There is a shareware app out there for the Mac that converts WMVs to a more playable format....maybe it's called Macflip...? Not sure.

I don't keep the original footage on my computer for these tests so I can't re-render a different format at this stage...sorry. I began creating the 720p versions of my files after people told me they couldn't play the 1080i versions...
