i think only hdtapes can handle hd and not the regular minidv.

The only difference is the error ratio. HDV tapes are less likely to cause dropouts compared to regular miniDV tapes. You won't see a difference in video quality. Also there is no difference between shooting 24p and 60i in terms of recording to tape since they are both recorded as 60i.
