can someone explain this to me in simple terms.

HDMI and SDI are both digital transfers which can contain both audio and video. SDI is capable of a higher bandwidth than HDMI. HDMI is also capable of HDCP protocol of content protection. HDMI would have sufficient bandwidth for HDV, AVCHD and Apple ProRes 422. You could not pass 8 or 10 bit uncompressed over HDMI. That's where SDI comes in. Also, SDI is capable of longer cable runs.
That's the sound-byte answer.
