View Full Version : Hvx and the sun
I was reading in the manual that you can damage the Hvx200 if you point the lens at the sun. I've seen some time lapses of sun rises and such. Will the sun actually damage the ccd's? How sensitive is it?
Thanks

I'm sure if you had the iris wide open and pointed it directly at the sun for extended periods, you could do some damage, but if you're careful with it, and set your iris properly to begin with, you should be fine. I hope I'm right... :)

I've done a ton of sun and sunset timelapses with no ill effects so far
(fingers crossed). I usually have the ND filter on or a polarizer, which
I'm sure helps. Tube cameras in the 70's could be ruined in seconds by sun exposure, but I can't find any internet evidence that modern CCD's
can, at least not easily.

Just try to stay about 93,000,000 miles away and you should be fine.
The RED, on the other hand, can come as close as 36,000,000 miles. Peter Jackson should have some fun with LOTR 4: Hobbits in Space.
