Issue: I'm wanting to capture directly from my camera to an external hard drive by way of my MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, the MacBook only has one Firewire 400 port. Final Cut can see the camera when it is connected directly to the computer, but when I'm daisy-chaining through the external hard drive Final Cut cannot see the camera.

Question: Is there some setting or means that I should be aware of, or am I inconsolably out of luck?

You guys are awesome!

Purchase an ExpressCard/34 PC Cardbus slot with Firewire and attach cam to that and the FW drive to the bus on the MacBook Pro.

Does your Macbook Pro have a Firewire 800 port? If so, you can just get a cable
adapter and use it. The Firewire 800 port automatically switches to Firewire 400.

There still is only one firewire bus, however, and my suggestion is to create a second one with the EC/34 adapter. You will improve your direct capture.
