Has anyone else experienced this problem?
(And before I begin I feel I must state the obligatory 'I already did a search and didn't find anything on this' that so often starts a topic)
I shot my first wedding yesterday, and it was also my first time with an HVX. I think I did a pretty s*** job :( but they knew it was my first and I'm not charging very much. Anyway, that's just an aside.
I shot SD 25p to tape.
Of course I don't want to capture out from the HVX itself to save the strain on it's heads (although obviously I plan to shoot more P2 than tape, I feel I owe it to this debt-inducing bohemoth to do right by it's heads, no matter how little attention they may receive. I don't want them to get jealous of the P2 drive, after all.)
Thus I started trying to capture tape #1 into FCP today through my trusty old Panasonic NV-GS400 camcorder.
After many frustrating capture attempts ended in dropped frames, I realised that the camera/tape was not displaying any timecode, or more specifically all zeros. (This also explained why FCP initially complained of not receiving any timecode when I tried to capture, and would only function with the capture device set to 'non-controlled'.)
I could think of only two possible explanations, either:
a) The 25p mode recorded on an HVX is somehow incompatible with the NV-GS400, or
b) All tapes rolled on an HVX are somehow incompatible with the GS400.
Theory (a) seemed pretty far-fetched, considering that the 25p is actually recorded as 50i (right?) Anyway I soon resolved this by shooting some 50i on the HVX, and once again it displayed no timecode upon playback through the GS400.
So it would seem that for some reason the GS400 just won't/can't read timecode from HVX sourced material.
Now, although concerning, this problem in itself is not causing me too much trouble, as I can workaround it simply by capturing with the device set to 'non-controlled'.
HOWEVER what is REALLY frustrating, and what I suspect is probably connected, is that the video and audio are out of sync by about three seconds. To re-sync them is a pain in the arse.
Tape #1 has already been captured through the GS400. This camera, although my first love, is also a filthy slut - I've run so many different tape stocks through her over the years, she'd be dirtier than a two-dollar whore. So once a tape's been through her, it's not getting within a hundred metres of my new HVX. Which means, no re-capture of Tape #1.
But there are 5 more tapes.
The dilemma I now face is this: do I run them through the HVX, putting strain on it's precious heads; or do I run them through the GS400, which will most likely involve more video/audio sync problems (and also effectively "blacklist" the tapes from the HVX).
Er..... I know it's a lot of information but, gee it p***** me off and I just want to vent. Anyone else experienced this?
