The only people who know are people not allowed to talk about it.

I don't know who all these "Apple technicians" are, but I doubt that at this point many people at all are certain...

Hey if they actually brought back one of those ancient boxes and just expanded it a bit and put in modern guts, you know people would buy it. Maybe not in the old school beige though.
As for the next tech specs, just go to Intel's web site and look at what they have advertised. Apple has been very aggressive about just using whatever new chip Intel makes and getting it into a line of their computers. So look at Intel's top of the line multi-core chips, then consider it as a dual or quad option, and voila, there's your next MacPro. Apple might stay hush hush, but Intel likes to tout its own horn, so you can get a rough idea of what's coming down the pipeline.
Cheers.

You're probably right.
It would be hip and retro.
I guess that's what you call stuff when you didn't use it the first time it made its way into the world.

I'd guess mid-November. The Penryn chip is supposed to be released on or about November 11. There is every indication that Apple will use it without it testing on the market first, as they did with the Xeon and Core Duo and Core 2 Cuo. This means they're already designing and preparing for it, and they'd get the chips right away, and start building and shipping right away. This would also put it in line with a released around the same time as Leopard, and pre-Christmas. This all makes sense to me.
Of course, I could be completely wrong.
For more, try looking at websites with educated guessers on there:

Yeah, the popular gossip seems to be that we're looking at mid to late November to January. I'm guessing with such high anticipation they'll sell like water in the Sahara. I know I'm eagerly awaiting them and have held off for the past 6 months in upgrading my G5 dual 2.0. (which works fine, albeit a little slow on the draw.)

Right there with you with my G5 dual 2.5
Should time out pretty well...hopefully.

Speaking of all the rumours and the potential forthcoming new Mac Pros...there's also the new OS coming soon. Office rumour (well perhaps moreso concern) is that the new OS will be Intel only. Has anyone heard/read anything about that?
Cheers.

'taint true! Apple officially announced requirements, and surprised folks by raising the "cost of entry" to an 867 MHz G4...

By apple techs i'm assuming you're referring to the mac geniuses. They don't have anymore information then you do. Apple is very secretive about it upcoming products even from it's employees. The people that know that type of information generally work in apple HQ and are much higher up then tech agents.
