View Full Version : Top Edge Artifacting

I'm shooting 1080 24pa and all my footage has this weird top edge artifacting that appears every 4 frames in FCP. This happens with different cameras and P2 cards.
Is this normal with this camera? Does anyone see this with their footage? Is this just a QT thing or is it actually on the footage?

You're probably talking about the interlaced "padding" frame; if you strip out the pulldown it'll go away.

FCP is taking out the the extra frames on import -- this is 23.976. If I look at the original MXF file with P2 Viewer I can clearly see it also.

It looks like these are HVX200P's if that makes any difference. P2 Log lists the codec of the MXF as DV100_1080/59.94i

If you can see it in P2 Viewer, and also in FCP, and it's on one frame out of five, then I'd say FCP is failing to remove the extra frames on import.

Thanks for your help Barry. If you could look at these two frames, which are stills directly from P2 Contents Management Software, I would appreciate it.
As you can see from the timecode display, the first frame shows the artifacting, the second shows the very next frame, which I assume is the BC frame. That would mean the artifacting is on every BB frame??

I've had the same problem. It's a top edge artifact on every BB frame, but the artifact is actually from the top edge of the AA frame rather than the BC or CC frame. This suggests that the problem has nothing to do with pulldown removal.
I don't have any solution yet other than cropping or running the top edge through a deinterlacer.

Thanks David.
So I guess the question is, has anyone shot any 1080 24pa footage without this artifacting??? I've had someone else confirm this also. It's pretty disappointing.

I know I posted this a long time ago, but I wonder if everyone is not experiencing this. We just shot a whole movie and it's on every piece of footage. Yes, you can cropped it out etc., but I'm wondering if there is a solution to not capture it in the first place.

I haven't noticed it on my 1080/24pa footage...I have some stuff I shot last weekend. I'll take another look.

I have the same problem with my HVX200. I once emailed Spec-com whether it is a hardwear problem or a software problem, they said it should be the FCP. But I really doubt it. Ive switched computers, used different versions, and it is still there, once every 4 frames of all the 1080/24PA footage I shot. ALL.
T.T and I have no way of rectifying it. I export to quicktime DVCProHD 108024P and it is still there on every 4 frame. :(

I've checked 1080/24pA footage on Vegas, and EDIUS, and Premiere Pro. No top-line artifacts. If there's something in your footage, it's gotta be the way FCP is stripping out the pulldown.
(you are properly removing the 24pA pulldown, right?)
