View Full Version : Unhappy with XHA1's 24p look compared to dvx

while the A1 may shoot 24p, it looks nothing like film (in my opinion). my friend has the dvx100b and i tried it out, and the footage looked so good! it looks so much closer to film. on my camera, the footage looks so "studdery" (is that a word) and it looks like there are less than 24 frames which almost makes me noxious. does anyone have any special settings for the A1 i could try out to make it look a little more cinematic?

Make sure your editing programs can correctly remove the pull down.

With 24F there's no pull down removal needed, the recorded footage is 24p. So if you're adding pulldown, that could be your problem. Your editor must be set-up incorrectly for the files, or you're shooting with too high of a shutter speed. There should not be obvious differences between the DVX and the Canon.

Really? Canon didn't put 24F in a 60i stream?

I believe they did for DV.

The hv20 does but the A1 doesn't.

A1 records "24F", which has no pulldown. It's sourced from interlaced chips, and recorded progressively (which is also why the Canon 24F/30F footage can't be played back on Sony equipment).

HV20 records 24P, using 3:2 pulldown. It's sourced from a progressive chip, but recorded in an interlaced data stream. But that makes it compatible with Sony camcorders and decks too.

Also make sure you are not judging from the viewfinder, and that you are judging from an actual progressive scan television. Coming from the DVX myself I can assure you that the cadence between the two cameras is exactly the same. We have even done shoots with both an A1 and a DVX and side by side the motion looks like it was shot by the same camera.
