Hey Dudes,

I am in a bind... no P2 cards. All I have with me is the HVX and a MiniDV tape... I havent spent much time with this camera and need to record tonight direct to MiniDV (then do some fast edits in FCP)

What menus do I use and what settings to set the camera up to record straight to MiniDV as SD resolution (720x486) so I can get rolling quick and dirty...?

:dankk2:

Just flip the switch on the back lower left from "P2" to "Tape".

Will it record natrually to 24P advanced? Where would I set it to just record 24P (really 29.97)

Manual>open it> read it.

:)

Seriously, this is pretty much covered in a section of the manual.

Might want to start there and come here with issues.

You can download the manual here:

ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/manuals/OM_AG-HVX200.pdf

I would definitely read it and experiment with the camera, otherwise you'll have a disaster on your hands during your shoot.

Like the time i shot a bands performance with the camera in 24pn mode but set to 30p accidentally, so they were 10% too fast (like a Charlie Chaplin movie) and completely silent.

Luckily another crew for a no-budget cable show recorded straight off the board and eventually got me some audio i was able to save the footage.

how much footage could a regular 60minute SP DV (dvx100) tape hold in terms of HD content taken with the hvx200 at 1080p 24pA?

Zero.

You can only record DV to tape.

The hvx200 does not record to DV tape.

Yeow, double trick question!
But 60 min is 60 min on MiniDV standard def if that helps.

okay so would this work for the hvx200? http://www.tapeandmedia.com/tdk_mini_dv_tape_hdv_dvc.asp

and if so, isn't that far more cost effective than those p2 cards?

That still just gives you SD DV.

The HVX does not record HD to anything but P2 media (or to something connected through a Firewire cable, like a FS-100 or a computer), and it is also not an HDV camera -- it records DVCProHD.

The HVX does not record HD to tape. When in tape mode and recording to miniDV it is basically a DVX100 with slightly less sensitivity and slightly sharper/better image in the progressive modes.
