There was a part 2? People actually like the first one? When did all of this happen?

The first one is fantastic if you watch it the right way.

Drunk? Heavily medicated? Concussed?

I thought that the CGI series we did, following the first film, was actually a much better product...

...missed out on a slot on II, because I was mired in jury duty...turned out I dodged a bullet.

Maybe III will be worthwhile...but it seems like a long shot.

*chuckle* Ed Neumeier was our screenwriter, on ST 1. Good for him.

He played the convicted criminal in the courtroom scene during one of the "TV" segments.

I think that film should inspire everyone in this forum because it just goes to show that no matter how much or how little talent you have you can still make films in Hollywood.

I saw the first movie when I was about nine or ten, whenever it was playing in theaters. My step-dad didn't realize there was a shower scene and a lot of gore in the movie. I loved the movie back then. Not so much at this age.

I thought it was hilarious... like, so bad it sgood, but theres still something brilliant in it.... somewhere? under the bug guts maybe? or maybe it fell into Casper Van Dien's Cleft chin???

Either way, i actually enjoy the film....

One of our rigging grips fell into Caspar's chin-cleft during location shooting in Wyoming.

Took a folding derrick and two hours, to get him out.

Well, it;s always an issue for me... I was very disappointed, having read the book in my youth, when I first saw the movie. But re-reading the book as an adult, I also found new perspectives on Heinlein's "50's style" patriotism, civics lessons, and condoning of wanton violence in the name of one's country ("Kill bugs sir!").... so I sort of appreciated the movie more as a sort of cynical take on some of RAH's extremisms. Still didn't love the movie, but I appreciated it more as a "modern" commentary on the 50's novel.

There's a lot of tradition of people writing novels (often really good ones!) as criticisms of Heinlein's work - Haldeman's "Forever War" and Panshin's "Rite of Passage" come first to mind - and this can be seen in that tradition... though not quite of top-caliber.

I don't see "Forever War" as a commentary on Heinlein...although for all I know, Joe Haldeman might.

"Forever War" is one of my favorite science-fiction novels, and probably the best military science-fiction story I have ever read (big fan of his other work, too...)

There's been talk off-and-on forever, about a "Forever War" adaptation. I think I'd rather not even see it attempted.

In various interviews Haldeman made it clear it was a pretty direct response... sort of a Vietnam vet's take on Heinlein's approach to the military. I guess not really criticism - he was a fan and friend of heinlein and liked Troopers - but kind of a variation on Heinlein's story showing another side.

But yes, Forever War is a great one, and I'd love to see it adapted if I wasn't so leery of adaptations. A lot of Haldeman books are among my favorites... though I find the recent ones have been a bit lacking...

I'm probably behind on my Haldeman reading. "Dealing in Futures" is the last collection of his, that I read.

There was a lot I liked about the first movie, most notably Dina Meyer in the afore mentioned shower scene. I took an instant liking to her, which I think turned into a full blown crush when she played Batgirl in Birds of Prey. The second movie was not nearly as good as the animated series, and I don't even think bringing Dina back for another shower scene would have helped it much.

You should check out the "Worlds" trilogy, at least, if you haven't! His best work, in my opinion...

If only everyone hadn't had to strip, while shooting the shower scene.

Sure, I want the talent to be comfortable. But I'm not happy about going *that* far, to achieve it...

I really enjoyed the first one. I think I saw it three times when it first came out. It's a silly film, but I still liked it. Nothing like the book (which I loved), but I just let it go. The animated series was a lot better. Although I thought the power armor designs were lame.

I even like the second one. The second film did have the "direct-to-dvd sequel" feel. Even in the commentary they were kind making excuses for it, but it had its moments. Character-wise I thought it was definitely the stronger film. And some of the bug effects were the best kind of nasty.

So I'll probably check this out.

You should have seen John Bell's power-armor designs, for the first feature.

Cut for (as is usual) budgetary reasons.

Some of the sketches might be in the 'making of' book; I forget.

I heard they had designs for the film, but I've never been able to find them. Might have to track down the making of book and check it out.

Carpe Dien...

This is what physicists call the Van Dien Chingularity. He's collapsed beyond the event horizon of the temporal-spatial distortion caused by his own chin. Watch out for the high-energy X-ray jets streaming from the cleft...
