Guys, just dumping (disacarding) my 16month sony hvr-z1p HDV for a new PANASONIC HVX200+16GB P2. - all look great so far.

Q: for downloading the P2 to a Firewire (4-6pin no power from camera) FATS32 file system portable disk (say a 160GB that has formatted and partitioned by the HVX200), is it possible to POWER the FW400 disk from the USB MIN-B (th 5v+) say at 100-200ma or what ever the disk needs)?

Simply I want to POWER the FW400 disk using the HVX200 USB MINI-B 4 x "pin" to a 3mm power cable to the FW400 portable disk. I can get these cables in here in Hong Kong.

I have spent time looking at the detailed info on this forum.

I have a 160GB disk I use on my MBpro for travelling.. and would reformat this as the P2 download FATS32 disk - accessible from my MP or MBPRO when I need it.

The reason for this request is that like many on this forum who have needs to travel light, I dont wanna ne dragging a MBPro laptop or a powersupply of a disk storage unit (say 250-500GB) around for a few days.

At this stage I would like to have a load of P2 cards but I think a start at 16GB is enaough as long as I can download a full P2 card.

Form te posts and Barry's book (that I have ordered), I understand taht thereFATS32 fs has a limit of 15 partitions - this 15 downloads. for me that is enoughfor the few days.

LAstly, has anyone used a selfpowered USB iPOD (Assuming all formatted by HVR200 as FATS32) for use as a portable disk P2 download? (Slow as it may be?)...

I doubt that will work.

External hard drives enclosures do not support multiple interfaces concurrently, so if you power the drive using the USB interface, the Firewire interface probably won't work (or work reliably).

Finally, the USB and Firewire ports on the camera do not supply power.

AFAIK there is no bus power from the USB or firewire ports. And you can only do the direct offload through firewire, not usb, so no the USB ipods wouldn't work.

If you want to use a portable battery-powered hard disk with an HVX, the only good choice out there is the Nexto CF 2525 Ultra hard disk enclosure. Put your own 160GB hard disk in there and you're in business.

Hi Barry , maybe it is a silly question, Do you think this Nexto can download a P2store ?

No, because the Nexto doesn't support USB On-The-Go technology. Other drives can though.

The P2 Store is a USB device, so if you have a USB On-The-Go box, you could (probably) use it to offload the contents of the P2 Store. I haven't tried that, but I have used OTG with an HVX200 and it works, so I can't see why it wouldn't work with a P2 Store.

Battery-powered USB On-The-Go boxes are fairly plentiful, but I don't know how much capacity their batteries have.

i have tried to offload the p2store with a usb2go hdd.
this worked with my hvx it didnt with my p2store.
the usb2go gave up a error signal...

maybe someone else could test it, too?
