This film is a true gem. I saw it in the theatre and was quite impressed, and having seen it a dozen times since, I still love it. The airport story alone is worth the price of admission, while the heist sequence is interesting and inventive.
Ben Kingsley is amazingly good as the manic gangster, Don, while Ian McShane is great as the icy Teddy Bass and Ray Winstone's performance as Gal, the put upon expat, is perfect. His subtle delivery is well contrasted against Kingsley's psychotic rants, and easily ranks with the level of work he did in Lenny Blue.
I just wish he had more to do in The Departed.
I own this on DVD, have lent it out many times, and it never fails to win new fans. This is clearly one of the best British Gangster films of recent times, and perhaps one of the best ever made.
