I'm using this camera for video diaries that my subjects will film for a documentary I'm producing. There is a port in the battery compartment that allows access to the 16x9 aspect ratio, otherwise it is 4x3. Does any one know how to change the ratio?

well, there's really no point. The Japanese version of the VX1000 is the only version of that camera with 16x9 capabilities, although it isn't true 16x9, but actually the same thing as the DVX100p's version of 16x9 aka putting letter boxes over 4:3 and just cutting away picture. You're better off making fake 16x9 in post production.
