Here is the first 30 Minutes for those of you youngster types who ahve never seen it
People mention John Carpenter and they say Halloween or The Thing in the same breath; and not without reason
But I always found this film his most polished in terms of mis-en-scene and bravado
It's the first 30 minutes, so look for the fight scene, the parent scene and of course when Arnie forst ses's Christine. Look at that two shot with the car mount and then the pan out of no where; GENIUS !!!!!!!!!!
It's john's last good film IMO
He was at the top of his game and then regressed and never matured

It's been a long time, but I'll put it on the netflix list and check it out again.
But -- "Christine" being Carpenter's last "good" film? Blasphemy! :) Both "Big Trouble In Little China" and "They Live" came after "Christine"... I'd put "They Live" as his last stroke of genius... I mean, after that we got saddled with "Vampires" and "Escape from L.A.'' -- blech.

I agree with you Barry, up to "They Live."
I mean do you remember how long that fight between Keith David and Roddy Piper was?????

I was still in highschool when I saw that film...and I think the fight scene ended just after graduation.

I always thought that Christine is one of the least of Carpenter's films.
Come to think of it, I still do.

I'd have to rank "Vampires" and "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" beneath it.

If They Live would've just had Kurt Russell, all would have been forgiven. :)
As for Christine, I don't remember it being all that. I think the premise alone made me think it was silly. But I'll throw it in Netflix. JH is so over the moon about it, I gotta check it again...

Christine freaked me out as a kid.
I remember some commercial that had Christine, Cujo, and that cat from Cat's Eye in it. I always thought that was cool.

If They Live would've had Kurt Russell, it would have brought home the Oscar for Best Picture.
But hey, it's Rowdy Roddy Piper's greatest role, I don't think he ever did anything else that compares with his accomplishments in "They Live". :)

I'm telling you.
I loved Big Trouble and They Live, but neither come close to the magic of my Top 5
JC's Top 5
Halloween
The Thing
Escape From New York
Christine
The Fog --- Campy and low-budget, but something is there. You can see the love of filmmaking in this picture depite the limitations they were given
JC's Bottom 5
Escape From L.A.
Vampires
Ghost of Mars
Village of the Damned
In the Mouth of Madness

I can discern a love of filmmaking behind "Plan Nine From Outer Space," too, but that doesn't go very far in the direction of making it a good film...

It may have been long, but it couldnt have been as slow or as lame or as long as this fight scene you Trekkie......
Mark Gave me his copy of "They live", and i must tell you, i really love that movie. Somethign about the whole sequence where OBEY is written everywhere when he puts on the glasses just seems so appropriate for todays audiences.
The Fog was great! i watched it in HD yesterday on "Monsers HD", and let me tell you, that was actually a really cool story. The bending of perspective on historical figures, one mans hero is another mans enemy etc... Really cool. ( the new version of The Fog sucked donkeys)
Escape from NY; ROCKS HARD. I wish NYC were like that. I remeber when i was little, we used to drive through SOHO with our windows rolled up because crack heads and junkies used to come up to the car whenever we stopped at a redlight. Nowadays, soho is like Champs`-Elyse`es.... Jesus. An apartment in that neighborhood was 12$ a month. One of my art professors used to pay 120$ a year for his lease in a 10,000 sqft loft space on Prince street..... The good old days i say.

I'll just say it is very typical of King's stories. It was an excellent book, but the movie left a lot to be desired. As far as Carpenter's movies, I'd put Big Trouble In Little China ahead of it.

Dude, if you went up against that thing, you'd pee your pants like a little girl and run home to mommy. Do not mess with Kirk. The man has MOVES.

Though if there is one man who could give him a fight, it would be...
Keith David.
Now that's a movie i want to see: Keith David vs. James T. Kirk...badass.

Keith David is awesome. I've been a big fan of him since I saw Platoon many years ago. And of course, They Live made me an even bigger fan. I love his cameo in Requiem for a Dream too.
