Eventhough I hate sequels, as sometimes they take so much away from the original, the trailer looks good. Hope it's good.

The original has become a cult classic, for good reasons, I think it's hilarious. But one thing though, the original theatrical release actually bombed at the box office to studio's standards.

This has happen to alot of cult classics, they usually bomb at the box office and some how they find life on Video and the rest is history. Other films I could think of that had the same effect is

Shawshank( I know how dare I mention this in a Harold & Kumar thread)
Friday
Half Baked
Weekend at Berney's(Eventhough part 2 sucked, I don't think it took away from the original.
Blade Runner
Space Balls
Jingle All the way(This bombed hard at the box office but I think it's safe to say it now has a cult following

these are just a few I could think of.

The greatest example is Citizen Kane. Failed at the box office and was dismissed by critics.

Harold and Kumar was ok, but nothing worth redoing... which makes it a perfect candidate for Hollywood!

Just because the film wasn't trying to do something "amazing," "visionary" or "bitingly original," does not mean that it doesn't hold up every bit as well on its own merits and qualities.

I enjoyed H&K, especially with friends.

I'm not saying it should have done something amazing, but it was just... there. The best part of it was Doogie Houser in my opinion. That was hilarious.

Haha, I wasn't attacking you. I was actually more responding to the original poster who mentioned that it was slight blasphemy to write about Shawshank in the same thread as H&K.

Shawshank to me is much more than a film, it touches the soul, as Harold & Kumar touches the funny bone, Apples & Oranges, but I love both.

Finding the first film funnier than I expected, I was kinda looking forward to the sequel.

My friend however, a bigger fan of the original, got to go to a screening of part 2 a couple weeks ago and said it was pretty awful (painfully dumb jokes, etc). I suppose they have quite a bit of time to spruce it up before the theatrical release, but I still took it as a pretty bad sign.

Didn't fight club do bad at the box office? Mainly cause it was advertised as "Some dudes that make a club where you fight"? That's a cult classic as well, and one of my fave films.
