Just recently picked the DVD's up, and hadn't watched the entire trilogy for quite some time.... buy are they fantastic films, and as trilogy they work so well! These movies have gone up toward the top of my fave. list. Great films!

The thing I liked most about the films is that it's more about the characters than about the actual time-traveling. What are your thoughts?

I always thought BTTF was close to being a perfect film.

As such, I would have preferred that it have no sequels. But the sequels were entertaining in their own rights. A little too convenient with the parallels in spots.

The orginal was indeed a great film; the rest sucked.

I love all of the BTTF movies.

I'm sad that the ride has been taken out of Universal Studios

Now, come on. They don't rank the world of sequel suckitude with Highlander 2 or Ghostbusters II.

But still, I'd prefer they weren't made.

They rank higher in the world of sequel suckitude than Leprechaun in the Hood.

Mainly for the same reason I am so offended by the Indiana Jones sequels. With the talent and resources at their disposal, the only reason to make such shitty films is that they simply do not care. They know us dumbasses will come see them anyway, so why try? For that reason they get no pass from me.

Running to the IMDB to see if there really is a film called Leprechauns from the Hood !

LOL

I ditto the INDY films.

Damn don't get me started.

I think Troll 2 is quite possibly the worst sequel ever - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyophYBP_w4

I think a reviewer asked , "did the world really need 3 Back to the Future movies?" and I agree with that. Frank Herbert's Dune deserved to get three movies, not just one partially brilliant and partially horrible rush job from David Lynch. BTTF Part II is kind of enjoyable just for its zaniness, but Part III felt listless and dull to me. The original is nearly perfect in its construction.

The first is awesome. The second has a sliver of nostalgia, and the third is just a pos.

The hands-down worst follw-ups were (GULP) Queen of the Damned and Highlander 2 (with Ocean's 12 and Godfather III finishing right behind.)

I enjoyed all of the Back to the Futures...and was pissed as all hell when I found out that no, hoverboards were NOT being released in time for Christmas

One needs to learn to make the effort in separating sentimentality with quality.

I am in the rare circle that finds Godfather III to be satisfying; not even close to I and II, but an honorable effort

Give me some "Phantom Edit"-style version without Sofia Coppala in one fucking frame and I'll agree with ya. The bitch single-handedly ruined
what would have been the only perfect movie series ever, I tell ya.
(and this is coming from a cat who had the honor of screening Godfather III with Andy Garcia...who was spot-on in his performance)

Godfather III is watchable, but so is That Thing You Do. Everytime it's on cable I watch that dumb Tom Hanks movie. Some films are like that.

Generally, I think sequels are just lazy filmmaking. I can only think of two that I really liked. Aliens (liked it better than Alien) and Godfather II. I agree that the first BTTF was entertaining but the rest served no purpose other than making money for the studio (nttawwt ). I feel the same way about the Terminator series. Loved the first one, the second was watchable but I would have never missed it if it hadn't been made and the third? WTF?

I really dug all three BTTF films. Grant it, I watched them one after another (since I didn't see any of them theatrically) but I really think they all work... I think three would be my least fave of the series, but I enjoyed them all together.

I am definitely in the minority in liking Alien better than Aliens, I think. But you're right as sequels go, it was one of the best.

I feel the same way about GF II. The thing about that movie was it felt like a "movie," as where the first GF felt like cameras were hidden around the homes and lives of the Corleones. I know the shooting style was not like that, but there was such a natural feeling to everything from the lighting to the acting, that to me, the second one just isn't quite in the same league. Dunno, I am alone in this opinion, for the most part.

Aliens is an amazing film. Godfather II is epic.

-

The Empire Strikes Back

Scream III

Blade III

The Road Warrior

Bride of Frankenstein

Halloween II is worthy

Terminator II

I would say Alien over Aliens (though do I dig both)...

The only sequels that come to mind as being better films than the original are:

Godfather II
Empire
The Wrath of Khan
The Bride of Frankenstein
The Road Warrior
After the Thin Man
Toy Story 2

Mark Harris

yeah, I forgot about that. Empire is by far superior to star wars in my eyes, and an amazing sequel in any case.

I liked Aliens better than the original, and Terminator II better than the first as well.

As far as the BTTF series, the first and second ones were great (mostly because they were planned so well they felt like one really long film rather than two). But the third one was barely good enough to warrant watching. Felt like they made it up as they went.

What has always made the first two great for me is the time travel paradoxes and whatnot. Most (serious) SciFi films make no attempt to address these things, and as such get pretty ridiculous. I'm still trying to figure out why there weren't two Captain Picards at the end of Generations...

Hudson got many of the sequels-better-than-originals from my list, including T2, The Road Warrior, and Aliens.

But of the sequels that were, um, not quite as good as the original, let's include:

Jaws 2
House 2
Smokey and the Bandit 2
The Matrix Reloaded
Big Top Pee Wee
Karate Kid 2
Ocean's Twelve
Batman 2
The Blues Brothers 2000

and the all-time worst motion picture in history,
Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie

I can see why people would find Aliens more entertaining, but I still think Alien is a far better film. I love the slow pace, the tension, the suspense, the atmosphere, the mood, the characters, the cinematography, etc. Aliens, to me, is more of a gaudy action movie, whereas Alien was a horror/thriller in space. And I like the less is more feeling with the effects. They actually moved the story along (the mother ship with the eggs and skeleton, the face-hugger, the chest-burster, and of course, the alien). And I'm also glad I'm not the only one who prefers Empire Strikes Back to the other star wars movies.

Only two?

As people have pointed out, The Empire Strikes Back was also very good, and The Wrath Of Khan is arguably the best in that series. I found Terminator 2 to be over rated. It was heavy on the CG and light on plot.

I thought The French Connection 2 was actually quite good.

Massive emphasis on "arguably". I mean, when you're talking about a series that includes Star Trek 1, III, and V, then it's pretty easy to be "the best in that series" (even though it isn't, and actually is pretty bad)...

I'm no Trekkie, but as far as I know, most say Khan is their choice as best flick in the series. I think some say it's III (or IV?), and that is why I said arguably.

With the newer ones having been released in the last few years, that debate may now be a broader one.

Back to the Future 1 was amazing on so many levels, I also really liked the second basically more of the same but with the whole year 2015 added which was really great. However the 3rd one was just so bad it was tragic.

Yeah the first Star Trek film was so bad it was basically an episode they stretched to feature length, I remember liking all the others (at least from the first generation).

Worst sequels:

Batman and Robin
X-men 3
Terminator 3 (hell can't even imagine the announced 4...)

Friday the 13th VIII Jason does Manhattan (I hope the number is correct)

Nightmare on Elm Street VI (In 3d, WTF? "Happy father's day"...:( )

Robocop III

Mortal Kombat 2

Rocky III

Exorcist 2

( Yes, I've watched all this crap...)

Best Sequels:

Godfather II
Aliens
T2
Snatch (not officially a sequel, but it spiritualy is- to "Lock Stock..")
Batman Returns
Infernal Affairs 2
Grudge 2 (japanese)
2010
BTTF 2

Better than the Original:

T2
Infernal Affairs 2
Godfather 2

EDIT- I also love the BTTF series. That music is damn catchy- and, of course, the Delorean... Michael J. Fox was perfect on the role. SHame for the TV career after that... He could've done a lot more challenging roles... ( His performance in BTTF seems like a "Kong-Fu less" Jackie Chan parody...Great!)

I'm a huge Trek fan, so I admit I'm bias, but looking at it from a general film sense, Khan was still great.

The first, third, and fifth movies, however, still suck, even from my perspective as a Trek fan... I actually timed a scene in The Motion Picture that was over three minutes long, and was nothing more than a shuttle flying slowly towards the Enterprise with the theme song playing... three minutes...

KAHHHHNNN!!!!

Khan was the best Trek film... with VI taking a close second I think. I think "Search for Spock" was good as well...

I thought they were all great movies. I think part II was pretty nessisary to the whole story. It seemed like forever between I and II and i was pretty happy when they finally did it. III is my least favorite of the three, and it seemed more like trying to make more out of the story than it needed.

My only rant with those movies is the fact that Doc and Marty could never seem to have a conversation without screaming.
