Ok, the movie is shot and imported into the mac! woo freakin hoo!
Actress (main character) bailed out on me. Call time was 8am, she didn't call me until 9:30am, said she was coming. Then called me at 10:30am to tell me that she was going to have to pass on the opportunity. GRRRR If you ever meet Olivia Roric from the Chelsea section of Manhattan, RUN THE OTHER WAY! She's a bltant liar!
Anyway, after brain storming for an hour me and the crew (8 of us) plus the two other actors basically came up with an entirely new movie on the fly. 99.7% of this film is improv! LOL, I'm not sure how I'm going to edit this movie and have a compelling story! = (
Looking at the footage gives me hope though, it's beautiful footage.

you didn't see my film my friend..... you might of seen the poster (posted here) but that's about it.
Is that against the rules?
Joops
10-22-2007, 08:24 AM
From the rules page:
Films may only be promoted on DVXuser.com before screening and no actual footage from films may be screened prior to the DVXuser screening. No promotion on external web sites is allowed until after the screening has been completed.
I guess that would be promoting outside dvxuser.
shuffle1
10-22-2007, 08:44 AM
Well, I wasn't trying to start an argument, but three or so web pages with cast and crew credits, behind the scenes photos, promo poster, release dates, etc, sure seems against the rules. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on what is and isn't promo material, and leave it at that...
Jack Daniel Stanley
10-22-2007, 01:25 PM
It is against the rules.
And ... the way this is usually handled is a polite reminder, which is what you were attempting, and then the promoting party says, "woops I was confused about that" and complies by taking the stuff down, and then we all move on and enjoy the festival and what I am sure will be a very fine film from Jay, no harm, no foul.
Bet yep. No posters, blogging, BTS, release info on any outside website.
Jay is a V.I.P vet around here and cool guy, but it is his first dance at a DVXuser fest. So no biggee.

Not to start anything up again, but your whole cast, crew, Techical info, and Behind the Scenes photos are still on an outside page ("Current", then under "Media"). It seems like an unfair advantage to others, since it's clearly against the rules, especially since you said you already took it all down.
Jay Rodriguez

Jay, my first post was an extremely gentle reminder of something I read during a cursory glance at the rules, and my other posts were simply to defend myself against unprovoked flames. I have nothing against you, and have been lurking on here for over a year, and I certainly wasn't trying to push your buttons. When I recently created my account, I'd never even heard of "Take Out". I went to your site, as I've done with others, because it looked cool, and had a look around at what you had going on, great stuff. No in-depth study or investigative work on my part, just an enjoyable ten or fifteen minutes of surfing. So, take care, and good luck with this, and all, of your future projects...

Ok, I think we can all dial this one down. After communicating with Jay, he took his stuff down and I don't have any reason to doubt that shuffle1 is a newly registered user (and yes I checked out his IP). I wrote the promotion rule to primarily prevent people from 1) spending too much energy on promotion as opposed to filmmaking and 2) to avoid vote begging on any external sites as in "hey come on down to dvxuser and vote for me!". I've disqualified films in the past for what I felt were significant infractions, but I don't see that this rises to that level.

Ok brother... this film made me want to look away...
Your evil dude was just out of control insane, lol! Nice acting on both characters... the shots looked good overall... seemed very much "your style".

I've watched about half of the movies, and this is one of my favorites--color coded the file for saving.
- spoilers-
The lipstick and of course the way he plays with his victim gave the character a Joker-esque feel that was cool. Honestly, loved that scene. Missed some sound on the bit with the bat, that could have had a bit more impact for the viewer. Last--the sick thing is, I had to skip dinner tonight and the shot of the meat in the stir-fry had my mouth watering! This abated when I recognized the tattoo though.
Awesome short.
The bad:
The sound was pretty dicey. I had to adjust my speakers to hear the quiet parts and then turn them down for the loud parts. That's all my negative.
The good:
Disturbing. Unsettling. Wrong. Bad.
Decent acting by both characters. Loved the dark circles under his eyes. My favorite so far.

I thought the piece of skin with the tattoo at the end was a nice twist. And yes, the guy was very, very twisted and funny. The interaction between to two of them was good, because the killer was real crazy and the other guy is trying to decide what he would have to say or do not to set him off - any more than he already was.
The victim's acting was okay and there was a thing or two with the sound, but I liked it and thought the killer was pretty funny (in a psychotic kind of way).

Nice short man, definately one of my favourites. I like making these films, and after my first "Stale Blood" feature, i want to continue making these type of sick, demented shorts.
That guy was messed, creepy, F'ed. He needed help, and i LOVED that! The acting was good. And yes, the volume was to loud when the guy was screamning, i also had to adjust my volume. Great shots. Great ending. 9/10.
Why was he naked on the toilet after? just for random, creepyness?
Jay Rodriguez
11-01-2007, 04:29 PM
hey thanks como! it was fun shooting this movie regardless of the hassles that I endured during it all. we completely wung this movie from beginning to end, totally improved and all. The reason why is because the lead actress backed out three hours after she was suppossed to show up. But, the show had to go on! lol new story, no shot list, no plan.
The toilet scene was thrown in there to incorporate a sense of insanity to the guy. He just taunted then killed someone and now he's sitting on the toilet sh!tting as if it was no biggie to him as he smokes a cig with his bloodied hands/arms.
The audio was horrible, I know. There wasn't much I could do to be honest with you. I had a buddy who never even seen a boom pole handle the audio.... lol, bad choice but I needed someone to handle the audio. I thought he would be able to make a good judgement on things but I know that I can't simply assume things.

Jack Daniel Stanley
11-02-2007, 03:23 AM
Wow man you really went there and I appreciate it. Pretty disturbing.
I really like the art direction in the basement.
And the whole thing had a real grindhouse feel to it too, meaning nice and gritty.
The crazy guy seemed a little generic. Like he had 10 different psychosis - something with little girls (be pretty for daddy) , some kind of gender issues with the lipstic, , etc., and none of them had to do with eating men, rather than settling on one specific thing that made him tic.
On a minor plausibility note - don't know why he didn't have 3 Italians with baseball bats of their own show up two hours after Luigi didn't come back to the pizzaria and wasn't answering his cell phone - I mean people tend to keep track of their delivery drivers in the NY area.
But it was still a fun ride and well put together, the vibe was there and the collaborative way you worked on it and shot it gave it an immediacy.
Thanks man.

11-03-2007, 04:42 PM
Sounds like your sound guy didn't know where to find the rotary dial for gain adjustment on his field mixer :( That made the film a sound designers' nightmare for me, while the visual side (cinematography, sets) looked awesome, and it has this really disturbing side to it.
And I missed the name of the score composer on the credits roll...

I could not really get into this; it was another Saw film; torture porn seems to be the flavor of the day and the Audio really suffered on this one and removed me from the film whenver that was evident.
I did like the simplistic visual style; it felt real and dirty and not stylized to distraction. But at the end, I was left watching a guy torture and kill and eat another guy; boring.
I was not afraid for the delivery person nor did I care about him. The crazy guy's character did have a disturbing side though; I think you succeeded on that level.
Sigh
... more hand-held.
I expected more from you Jay !

I totally bought your actors. Talented. Great look.
Not sure about the use of zoom in some of the shots (notably the mirror shot), but I liked the handheld.
Didn't buy that that was the front door the pizza guy came in.
The ending was very good - nicely set up.
The story was simple enough and it held my interest.
In the end, I think this came off as more of a vehicle/showpiece for your lead actor. But I liked it and I thank you for making it.
On other notes: Another plastic-walled room. And another guy on a toilet. And another cannibalism theme. Are these new trends or was this pure coincidence?

I was psyched to see you entered your first dvxuserfest.
I read the story about the no-show actress - what a nightmare. Given that you made the story up on the spot, I thought you did a good job.
My favorite thing about it was the look, dark and creepy. Also, I thought your actors did a great job.
I would love to see what you come up with, given a little more story to work with.

REVIEW:
Of the "torture-porn", or whatever you call them, films, this is the one I like best so far. I think mainly because I was able to laugh with it. Now, I don't know if that was your intention, but by making this guy so over the top in a creepy BUT funny way, I was a lot more into it. I didn't like the the talking too himself stuff in the beginning, but it helped set him up a bit I guess. Acting was very good and the delivery almost felt like I was watching a theater piece.
Good job.
FILMMAKER-TO-FILMMAKER:
I didn't notice any technical problems, but because of the "reality" feel to the film, I wouldn't have noticed any. There were obviously a few sensical issues, but others have pointed them out so I won't nit-pick.
Anyway, thanks for making me laugh uncomfortably.:undecided

hey thanks everyone. I appreciate everyone's feedback totally. again, the movie was totally conceived the day of, scenes were thought out minutes before being shot and makeup was planned at the same pace. Everything was sort like adding spices together to see how the pudding tastes. lol
I know there's some weak spots primarily in the audio and in the story but we had fun doing it, mistakes and all.
Thanks fellas..

Hey Jay R.
Very nicely shot and lit. The acting of the main was pretty good. The character seemed like a stereotypical crazy guy though. The meat cooking in the pan looked great at the end. The story was decent overall but it probably could have been shorter. That was a nice shot when he was hacking the guy with the cleaver.
Good job making it up on the fly. Oh I have been down that road of having an actor not show or something fall through. Good recovery.

I haven't had time to watch many of the festival films as I've been traveling and a bit tied. But... having met you once at the first DVXuser NYC meeting I thought I'd check out the work of a fellow Jerseyite.
Whoa, great work. You really built the tension here. Yea, as others mentioned, sound needs a bit of help, but everything else was great. The performances were really good. Really hits the viewer in the gut.
Good luck Jay!

Hey Erik, thank man! I appreciate your response. I plan on bringing the movie to an audio production studio in manhattan that a friend of mine runs so that he can perfect the sound for me. I look forward to getting as much repair work done as possible to this thing.
So, are you in canada now?
HA! I just hit your website for a quick browse. I remenber you! How's it going buddy?!
