Someone told me its illegal to render a file out of vegas in mpeg2 without permission from MPEG association or www.mpegla.com (http://www.mpegla.com) .

So i was doubtful so went and looked up the help files and under legal it says something to that effect. Im stumped. So plz check and let me know what this is.

It says something like users arent supposed to render to MPEG2 files for professional or profitmaking purposes. Its to be used for home use only. Is this true or am i getting it wrong.

Is this true ? Why would anyone purchase a NLE and then have to pay for the file they render from it ?

PS : Look in the legal section in the help files.

I read it, and I don't think it makes much sense reading that... So, I wouldn't worry about it as everyone uses mpeg2. IF there was a legal problem, linux wouldn't support it out of the box.

However, the Sony AVC/AAC paragraph above it clearly says that it's for non-commercial purposes -- at least on Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8 version.

The MainConcept AVC codec is better, anyway.

Whats the mainconcept AVC codec ? Which render template is it under. I cant seem to find it.

Its appalling to sell an NLE saying it renders to all these formats only to find that you have to pay to use any format of render. Most people want to render to mpeg2 and most people like us. For professional purposes. Whats the point in asking us to pay to render.

Vegas is becoming quite like Premiere pro and some of those other irritating programs out there that ask you to pay more at every step.

You're not asked to pay more. It's not like you need to pay to unlock the functionality.

The legal notices are as a CYA for Vegas, not as a prohibition on use.

Yes David, Definitely the mainconcept rendering works fine. Its not like a locked plugin etc. But good is that if we cant render to mpeg2 for professional purposes ? We bought Vegas for professional purposes. The website markets this software as being able to render to certain formats and doesnt warn that a certain format is illegal to use for pro work.
