Was revisiting this movie because I got a free HD-DVD. I was wondering why this movie's *look* looks so cheesy. I mean everything from the costumes to the sets to the lighting to the look of the film all look so.... sci-fi TV movie'ish. Like the big budget version of a production with no money, if that makes any sense.

The obvious answer is "because they were terrible filmmakers". But this was one of Universal's big realeases that year. Don't they have people in place to make sure every single thing in the movie doesn't look incredibly cheesy? Didn't they hire some of the best in the business at what they do?

The lighting alone looks so amateurish. With the neon blues and neon reds and the badly staged silouetting of characters. It was just awful. Contrast this to movies that look so amazing like The Matrix and Constantine (bad film but absoultely stunningly shot) and Batman Begins. Ultimately, I would like to make sci-fi movies and I'd like to know what these guys did wrong so I can avoid their mistakes.

From a technical point of view I can't comment, I would have to see it again and pay details to the technical aspect of it, but I think I may be the only one on the planet who actually liked this movie.

Everyone I talked to hated it.

Liked it. I like the opening sequence on the ice planet. Plus, the character of Riddick is a great oldschool badass. Do a youtube search on 'riddick' - there are a lot of fanboys out there who dig the movie. Check out the montage re-edits to NIN songs.

WOW!!! I had no idea, yeah that ice opening sequence was great, and I liked the bad guys who destroyed planets, the coolest part of the whole film is when the leader snatch the other guys Soul! that was crazy...

I was really hoping they made more Ridick films, but the box office numbers didn't do so well, so I think this was the last one.

I guest I'm not alone out there... but we're probably out numbered...

Didn't like it much, first time around, but have seen it a couple times since and it has grown on me...a *lot*. Not bringing expectations, I guess. And I'm listening to the score, right now.

The look c.g. is commenting on, may be the result of a poor transfer, and/or the fact that sometimes telecine just sucks - no matter what the original filmed product looks like.

I thought it was great fun, and in places wonderfully visually creative - like Colm Feore striding along between parked rows of towering huge, anthropomorphic spacecraft - and they are slowly kneeling for him as he walks past...

...and Thandy Newton wrapped in skintight shiny textured plastic...genius, I tells ye, pure genius...
