View Full Version : Where is the preview window, like in Premiere?

I recently switched over from Premiere. Click here to find out why.(http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=108001)

One thing I'm trying to understand in Vegas is the absence of a preview window (like there is in Premiere). For example, I imported a 30 minute clip into my project and would like to search for the shot that I want to import into the timeline. In Premiere, I would double click the media in the bin, and it would come up on the preview window, then I would scrub through the 30 minute clip to find the 5 seconds I'd like to use. But in Vegas, there doesn't seem to be a similar way of doing this. So I ask, how do Vegas editors acheive this simple practice. Thanks.

Most probably use the Trimmer. You can right-click a clip and send it there.

Or set a menu option to automatically do that on a double-click. (I think)

I'm pretty sure there's also an option to automatically play a clip when it is highlighted....but don't quote me on that. And that wouldn't help with what you want, anyway.

So you go to the trimmer, set an in and out point, then drag to the timeline? What do you do personally? I guess I'm wondering if the way I've been doing it (and the way they have it in Premiere) is an antiquated way of thinking. Does Vegas have a new and better way to approach this? And if so, how?

In the trimmer, you set your in/out points (traditionally, with keys, or by dragging out a region), select a track and position on the timeline, and then press "A."

When you play something in the trimmer, it appears in the main preview window, and in your external monitor if you have one set.

It's different from other, two-window approaches, but when do you really ever use both windows at the same time? I, too, missed the second window at first, but then I realized it was just a waste of screen space.

What do you do personally?

Wrong person to ask. I just drop things on the timeline and trim it there.

I've never had to do a really complicated project...yet....so that works fine for me.

I just drop things on the timeline and trim it there.

That's what I do, too.

Me too.

I used to, but sometimes dropping it in the timeline would disturb other clips and audio. Then I started using the trimmer window more and more. But still, there is nothing like just slapping it on the table and trimming it right there.

on the timeline.... it is easy, no need for second place to work in... if ur timeline is full quickly zoom out go to the end and work there, then cut and paste...

or to avoid some fades to be modified when dropping a big clip on top of others, which I am not sure why and when this happens but it also happened to me before, then just add a video and audio tracks, select them individually and then delete them when done working on them

Vegas FTW

But by doing it at the end of the project like that, you're doing the same thing you'd do in the trimmer, only taking a couple more steps to do it. Plus, you don't have the level of fine control that you would in the trimmer.

aha.... yea... I knew there would be a use for the trimmer LOL
can you pull out a section of the clip and then keep it in the trimmer to pull out an other section as an option?

too bad all u can do is in and out points... wish u cloud use it as a Sound Forge interface

will try out the trimmer for in/out points ASAP! thanks guys

You don't really pull anything "out" of the trimmer. The clip stays as in inside it.

The clip which appears on the timeline is a pre-trimmed copy of the clip, but you can expand it back out to full size if you want.

Just pull on the end you want to expand, and it will go as far as the beginning or end of the clip, no further.

Just pull on the end you want to expand, and it will go as far as the beginning or end of the clip, no further.

But if you have looping enabled, it'll loop.

I could never figure out how to get it to loop, so I must not have turned it on. Where is that option?

Typically, looping is on by default. But to check, right click on the clip and go to properties. You should see a checkbox next to the word "loop." You can turn it on and off there.

Hope that helps...

Cool, thanks. There have been a couple times that would have been nice.
